I will be attending STAR truck driving school in the coming weeks. They are one of the - if not the BEST school for attaining your CDL.

I toured a few other schools in the area, and STAR is by far above and beyond the others.

First off, to attend STAR you MUST be pre-hired at a trucking company, which they do for you. Before they accept you at the school, they give you a stack of applications to fill out and then fax them to all of the companies. I am currently pre-hired through STAR to work for Schneider and CRST. No other school does this, they are more then happy to just take your money and send you out on your own to find a job. When you attend STAR you KNOW you have a job waiting for you when your 6 weeks (240 hour class I am assuming?) is completed.

Also, you do not have to go to the DMV to take your CDL test. The Secretary of State testers actually come TO STAR and test the drivers right there in the trucks you have been training in.

STAR also will help you with your pre permit testing, and everything in between.

Lastly, STAR is located in an ACTUAL trucking terminal, so you will be training backing in and pulling out of ACTUAL loading docks.

I went to see Alamo truck driving school on 47th in Chicago, and the place is basically a 30 year old run down trailer for a building, and just a small gravel open field. The inside smelled of ###, and the people running it spoke broken english. They care more about your money then you getting an actual job. Avoid !

I also went to Progressive to check it out in Lansing. I will tell you this - they were just REMOVED from the approved vendors list for WIA grants from the state of Illinois, so you know there is a reason hidden in there somewhere...... I also heard that Progressive used to send their drivers to STAR for help on the permit testing because they couldn't get permits for some of their own drivers........ AVOID !

This is just my opinion...... but I have toured several schools and facilities and I am going with STAR.

Just wanted to clarify this: I said STAR was located in an actual trucking terminal. I was referring to the Hickory Hills location. I know they have a school also at South Suburban College, which is NOT in a trucking terminal.

I asked about that actually - and what I was told is this: The school has a 100% graduation employment rate, and they will not tarnish it. SO - if you have a job already lined up on your own, you MUST provide them with the name of the company and a pre-hire letter. Also, you have to give them the phone number to the company, and they WILL call - and it better sound like a company when they answer the phone lol.

Thats what I was told, but if you call the Hickory Hills office, ask for Shelly - she will fill you in, and she is good people.

I went to Professional Truck Driving School Inc.
It's in Summit, IL. 6246 S. Archer (63rd st. and Archer Ave). 708-554-1900
It was less expensive than Star is about all I can say...
As far as how good, I thought it was ok. Classroom was in Summit, and training in truck was in Bridgeview (not far from 87th and east of Roberts Rd.) And trainers were very nice and helpful.
Same as Star, DMV comes to the school for your final testing.
Good luck to you no matter where you go!

I just passed the CDL test at the Hickory Hills location. Three of the instructors there have combined experience of approximately 97 years. I thought it was well worth it and enjoyed my time there. From what I've heard, the Bensenville and Oswego locations are in truck terminals as well, but the lots are smaller. HH is probably the best location and has the most attendence. They had recruiters from Schneider, Werner, Swift and Roehl come in, and also had prehires put through CSRT, and a couple other companies. Currently working with Roehl and trying to get on with them.

They also have on-site SOS testing at their locations.

ok as a former driver for Star Transport of Morton they do training school for their drivers only. if you need more info for their training school you can find the contact info on their website (google it and youll find it. since admin is a bit ansy about links being posted).
I suggest you find a local truck driving school or look up local tech colleges that provide the service. i can suggest one for here in wisconsin at fox valley tech college. i know they do training for cdl. otherwise look around.
