I can't help but notice a lot of newer trucks are coming with weed burner exhaust. Starting with the Freightliner Cascadia, Kenworth trucks. IT seem's Volvo and International are still using the stack on the rear of the cab.

What is the reasoning? Weight? Cost? Space? Decreased fumes from newer engines? No intrusion of water/snow into the DPF/SCR system?

Stacks came about to disperse the smoke from Diesel engines. I think the stacks have been disappearing slowly for the past couple of decades. The first to eliminate the stack were the vocational trucks it is now creating into the class 8 trucks

How safe for it to be under the sleeper?

Most of our new trucks are coming with those darned weed burners, too. I don't know why, but that's how the company is speccing them out.

Maybe without the stack at the back, the headache racks and fifth wheels can be moved up a bit more? I dunno....just trying to blue sky it, or take a WAG....

The stacks make no difference to the positioning of the Fifth wheel the corners of the trailor clear the stacks even now, the back of the cab comes closer than the stacks do. Most of it is weight and cost, you do not need the stack or the mounting brackets, You do not have the expense of the chrome stacks, and the exhaust is more efficient. The longer the piping the more restriction, the exhaust is a lot cleaner than it use to be, and it is a lot more aerodynamic.
    Just a thought!

I would say cost. With DOC/DPFs and now SCR systems under the truck, most of that spare room and possible routing combinations for exhaust routing is gone. 9900i can still have them depending on the emissions configuration ordered.

It is simple ugly trucks don't need cool chrome stacks !!! Putting chrome on a aerodynamic truck is like putting lipstick on a pig before you kiss it ......you are still kissing a pig !!!:yes2557:

I think its due to routing and cost, I'm sure they routed them to above the cab due to fumes at first then it became cool and a matter of necessity. With out my big pooch pipes I ain't doing it, there are certain things a man can't live without those are one of em'.

no stacks will be in future, becouse unused DEF may be collected in bottom of catalistic converter and may crystalise there.

Europeans switched to weeed burner exaust over 15 years ago, so stacks are used for nordic versions only. Really no problem for air in sleeper.

And new trucks are not designed for idling. They install bunk heaters, whater heaters and AGM batteries. APU will not be developed too

    Heavyd and robbiehorn Thank this.
