For those interested in learning/familiarizing themselves with how to better use the so-called, "split sleeper" function of the HOS logs, with jobs mainly within the reefer sector of the industry -- I offer to you the following link to what is one of the better explanations/descriptions I have seen for this function; wish to high heaven someone else had shown me such a file.....prior to my own earlier "commando"missions when doing reefer duty runs:
from Werner's website -- split sleeper tutorial with examples -- hope this helps -- a downloadable PDF file
NOTICE: The above guide will NOT save you from the resulting disrupted sleep schedules/cycles that will likely follow -- if you do decide to master & use this technique. Note also -- that sleepy driving is basically drunk driving (whether you are driving a big rig -- or not). And thus -- you have been adequately warned.
I am NOT an expert on the use of this technique. Thus -- if you have questions after reading this file -- I would suggest that you direct those questions instead to your driver trainer dept at your chosen carrier. If you are contemplating driving for a certain reefer fleet, and your driver trainer dept or group cannot/will not adequately answer questions of this nature -- consider that to likely be a RED FLAG for prospective employment there.
Safe travels......

Follow-up: BE SURE to ask your prospective reefer/other freight carrier (preferrably during your orientation session) specifically how they want/don't want you to use the "personal conveyance" feature of the HOS system with their driver logs.
If -- for whatever reason(s) -- they won't allow you to use the so-called "PC" feature at all -- then you should know and understand that UP FRONT -- BEFORE YOU EVEN START driving for them.

My buddy runs split-sleeper, at least once a week, and you can guess what he pulls. Haha. He requires little sleep, so it works great for him and his employer. I can’t do it.
singlescrewshaker Thanks this. -
I run reefer, sometimes the split sucks and I have to pull over and take a nap. Other times I’m annoyed taking the break. I guess over all I’d rather not. Plus can’t miscalculate hours and distance to where you want to be. But gotta do what ya gotta do. Just safely.

I goofed one time not realizing the big break had to all be continuous sleeper berth. There's a few "gotcha's" that can getcha on split sleeper if you're not careful. Our ELD was omnitracs and I hated how if I did the short split first it would, depending on circumstance, show as being in violation until I completed the long break. The first time that happened I was thinking wtf? but finishing the other split made everything right. I hated using split sleeper and it was only as a last resort if things were tight. Sure do miss the simplicity of paper logs that I was running up until last summer. Things were so effortless on paper and hardly any thought at all into where to break or even planning the trip really.

Yeah, I think the biggest is always do the big break as sleeper only. For the most part the omnitracs will tell you when you're messing up. Except for sometimes on the split it shows you in violation until you finish the 2nd break.

If this system is what I think it probably is -- then this problem will freak out a lot of drivers that are new to reefer and/or split sleeper. Given your post above -- rookies can now ask their trainers and/or safety dept about this problem -- BEFORE it's a real problem for them.....

Motive/Keep trucking shows violation until complete other break too.
Will even send automated email to department heads. But never a revised email when they see you done it right.Soltaker, lual, rollin coal and 1 other person Thank this. -
Can you run for an entire week on doing just 7&3s (or 8&2s), or do you have to take a 10 at some point?
