Anybody know by any chance the spindle nut socket size for the steer axle on a 2007 W900. They're ConMet preset hubs on there. I would like to buy the socket beforehand. Dont like to take it half way apart and then trying to chase a socket. For my drives it was a 4" so has to be smaller for steer.
Also when I did my drives I torqued nuts down to 300ft-lbs inner 200ft-lbs outer as per spec. Do you guys do them the same way? I heard mechanics say that they still back them off some even tho they're preset. Hub temps been running around 110-120F since it did them and I've put some miles on them so far so good. Can't find a temp spec and ConMet says they can run as hot as 150F above ambient.

Yes I did follow the instructions and I got the torque specs from their website. I feel like a lot of mechanics are afraid to get these bearings tight. The spindle nuts came off pretty easy which means last guy who worked on it set them hand tight. Would explain why seals lasted only one year.

Only reuse the spacer on a conmet hub if you reuse the bearings. NEVER reuse that bearing spacer on new bearings.

Honestly, those spacers wear over time causing it to loose clearance. I dont like reusing them. I leave them out and set bearings the old way with dial indicator or basically zero to SLIGHT preload.

Yea I thought about leaving them out but i couldn't see anything wrong with them. To be on the safe side I've been monitoring the hub temp with a temp gun and all seems normal as far as I can tell. How hot do your hubs run the way you set them I am curious.

Bearing clearance specs of .001-.006. Can you see that even though you can see the moon and how far is that?
Bearings to tight will tend to generate heat while loose bearings will tend to cause a seal failure.
Sorry I cannot answer you normal temp question but it is highly effected by the brakes and vehicle usage.
Would be more concerned about one running much higher than the others or anything over about 250 degrees.
Infrared temp guns are cool but there are other indicators.
Burnt rubber smell: May be caused by heat from a low pressure tire. A rotten or separated tire about to give up. A brake dragging transferring heat to tire.
Burnt oil smell: Could be a leaking wheel seal or a bearing problem anywhere from the hub to the driveshaft.
When running heavy and or before going into an area without services for a long time I always stop and look things over. Touch the tires and hubs while fueling or just do a pretrip in the middle of the trip.
Yes you can get odd looks from the "It blows smoke and the wheels roll pretrip guys. Wave when you go by.
