hi all,
i have a 1996 International 8100. the truck has the Spicer 10 speed (high / low). the shifter works fine (fortunately) but the rubber handle is falling apart and i want to replace it. i called the dealer and the replacement shifter lists at $900+!!!
i've looked at the local junkyard (Illiana Truck Parts, an awesome place) and found hundreds of Fuller shifters but nothing that matched my Spicer. I've looked on eBay, etc. no luck.
is there something really special about these Spicer shifters? it seems to me that it's a normal air shifter with the typical high/low. only thing that seems odd about it is that there are four lines (three air lines and the exhaust). any recommendations on a generic shifter that would fit? i found some Dorman models online but it seems like they are set up for the Eaton models and only have three threaded ports (including the exhaust).
any help would be appreciated with this, thank you!

Could you post a photo, so it’s able to see how it’s hooked.
Partsgeek website has a ton of parts for old vehicles, might have to go with a custom one -
here's a pic
thanks!

JC Smith on YouTube just had the same issue.
Said original was 1k.
Chinese aftermarket $500.
Keep checking junkyards.
An if those junkers know it's worth they probably ask 500 at least for it.
Good luckLast edited: Mar 11, 2022

There's a plumbing diagram in that pdf. I left my readers in the truck, so I couldn't dig much, but there's some sort of interlock with 1st and reverse between the shifter and the air piston. -
I don't know too much about these shift knobs (which might explain why I'm thinking there's a work around somehow) but is it possible that I can somehow adapt an Eaton shift knob to work on this truck?
I'm attaching a pic with the plumbing diagram on my shifter and here's a link to an Eaton catalog with lots of shifter options. Does anybody out there understand these enough to figure out a way to plumb an Eaton shifter into my Spicer transmission? Admittedly, I don't know too much about these but it can't be that the only solution is to drop $900!
I would appreciate any help. Thanks all!

Okay, stick with me here.
So it appears the Spicer switches the air at the handle to actuate, while Eatons handles it with controls that the shifter sends air pressure signals to. So a direct connection won't work.
But in the plumbing of my suspension overlift, there's what's called a pilot valve (haldex, IIRC) that sends air to one of two ports depending on whether there's pressure on the signal port.
So you could run any of the Eaton knobs, and just use it to signal the pilot valve, which would be plumbed just like the Spicer shifter. To the low side with the selector down, and the high with it up. -
