Well i just got my CDL a few weeks ago, i took the test in a FL80 Freightliner single axle truck with a 4 car gooseneck trailer (fifth wheel not a ball). when the license was issued they gave me the Z restriction which they said "because it has a "baby fifth wheel" it needed the Z restriction. Now i have all the insurance i need and i now have the contacts i needed for loads so im ready to go to work. last night i was looking at a TN cdl book just scrolling thru and i came across this "57 - Except Tractor-Trailer - Added to the Class A only, for drivers who operate a vehicle meeting Class A weight definitions, but the power unit alone is also capable of carrying loads. Examples: Dump truck towing a backhoe. Truck towing a mobile home."The Z is Except Tractor-Trailer on my license, i took the test with a truck that cannot carry a load by itself and the trailer was over 10,001 pound. This is what SC says about a Z restriction "For a driver to lift the Z restriction, they would need to take any knowledge test as needed and take the complete road test ( pre-trip, basic control skills and road test). The unit must have a fifth-wheel articulation
and meet the GVWR requirements to lift the Z restriction. " I DID THE PRETRIP, THE BASIC SKILLS AND THE ROAD TEST WITH A FIFTHWHEEL THAT HAS ARTICULATION OBVIOUSLY, AND the fifth wheel is rated at 32k pounds. i dont want to go to another state and get jammed at the scale house because of a mistake. What should i do? does this sound right?

It seems the same as wanting to get a passenger endorsement...you cannot get it if you test in anything except a bus. A straight truck won't work. Since your trailer was a lighter trailer...maybe if you went back with a heavier trailer?
I dunno. Seems like a load of crap, but maybe have to go back with a heavier trailer. -
my trailer is weighted at 28k, wayy above the 10,001 pound that makes it a class A truck and my power unit is under 26k and cannot carry a load by itself
-
Yeah its not making sense the more I think about it. But, the DMV has always been run by morons...lol
RustyChops41 Thanks this. -
i just dont want these morons to take my license back lol. I need this to drive this truck, i took the test in it and i had to check all 5th wheel parts. So i believe i qualify for the Z restriction to be lifted. To add to that, even if the trailer had electric brakes they told me it would count off if i didnt say Brake chambers/ airlines on the trailer portion. im wondering if i should call the CDL help desk or just go back to the DMV to get toyed with

How about just renting a truck for the test that the DMV considers as qualifying?
-
because i already have my class A i just want to understand why this restriction is there. I have my Own truck im not going to spend 100s to rent a truck when i already have the equipment right here that i own. I have no "ball and chains" nor the pintle hitch, i have a fifth wheel. thats like saying "your going to get an automatic restriction even though your going to take the test in a stick shift truck".
-
i might add my truck is a tractor unit, i cannot carry a load on the truck itself. that makes it a "tractor trailer" combination lol.

but that means using the same type of equipment i already have. you dont think i should call the CDL department?
