I have a sound that developed today that is like a belt slipping (sorta kinda maybe) except that it is tied to the amount of turbo boost.
The sound (which sorta sounds like a belt slipping on bad bearings) starts at 10 psi on the manifold guage. I might be seeing a small loss of boost pressure, hard to tell.
I'm thinking that it is a clamp slipping under pressure and letting some of the boost pressure escape under the flexible pipe, leading to a "kazoo" type of sound. (If you don't know what a Kazoo is, there is no hope for you).
I have the old turbo sitting next to me. So should I try to figure out if its a clamp, or just change the turbo back?

It may be an exhaust leak before the turbo. I would check all the bolts in the exhaust manifold. Its my guess that 1 is broke.

What year and motor. My accert cat had the same kinda noise and it was 2 things. 1 some of the exhuast sleeves on the manifold where broken and 2 one of the metel pipes had a crack in it from the turbo.

when the new turbo was fitted , were the contact surfaces cleaned and a new gasket installed.
P.S u can check for leaks by, spraying soapy water onto surfaces. start tuck run at about 1500RPM for say 3 to 5 mins (or get someone to sit in truck and help) to build boost then with engine still running, spray soapy water onto joins etc.

It's a 2000 Century with a C15. I just had a new exhaust manifold and turbo put in, about 4 weeks ago along with a new flex pipe after the s pipe, and a new Walker Noisebreaker muffler. I don't have exhaust sleeves so that's out. I will take a closer look at the manifold. Hopefully it will fail gracefully.

Very interested in the outcome. Yesterday my bxs started making the same noise at 35+ psi.

Check the air to air exchanger for cracks with a pressure tester.

If you start blowing a LOT of BLACK smoke, shut that truck down or you'll overheat that Turbo, believe me, I've done it.

I doubt it's the turbo, I'd say you have an air leak. Inspect the hoses between the turbo aftercooler and engine. You may also have a small crack in the aftercooler. As boost rises it gets worse, because the air pressure is rising and the volume of air escaping through the hole is actually making a noise like a whistle or in this case kazoo

    Big Don Thanks this.

I had to drive Sunday/Monday so I got to listen to the sounds change. It settled down to that pfft pfft pfft sound of a single cylinder leak. I think I need to get the exhaust manifold retorqed. Hopefully I will get that done on Friday, the radio will only go so loud.
