I hate to be necro this old thread but I found this too funny to not mention it . I was just headed down 85 and was talking with a nice guy who runs dedicated up and down there. We got to talking radios after we lost each other then came back into range. I complained that I only get a few miles at best out of my Galaxy DX-66v3...and he recommended Sonrise. The funniest part was his answer to me asking what they could do since my setup is dialed in to ~1.1SWR and 48ohms, the radio came from a supposedly reputable shop that tunes every radio they get in to sell, and everything is in good working order AFAIK.....He listed off the exact things you said about grounding, needing ground straps for more surface area than round wire, and even added a Bandit power filter. All things that they can relate to some grain of truth, as most scams are, but ultimately do nothing. Nothing against him personally, nice guy, he was just lied to and didn't know better.

Part of the issje is that some try to do it cheap but expect hi performance without doin the work...
If you want a 2-5 mile cobra then just use the factory stuff in the truck...
If you want bigger n better then as a consumer you have to do some self education..Just because joe blow spends a grand on his radio, doesnt mean he doesnt get squat range...That grand is not much more than a braggin rite for some...
No matter how much you have to spend on radio gear its ALWAYS gonna be ant choice, mount location and how to set it up best for what its mounted to that makes the diff...Another issue is some of these shops who do the one time cash grab and send you out the door feeling happy you got raped...Why? Cause they figure out that you know nothing....
People need to read forums and go to places with a good reputation and find info through various sites n vids, basically a person just has to do some work for themselves..
Personally im only scratching the surface of this hobby but i have sourced info, talked to those who are way more informed than i am to get a good set up..Only cause i was willing to put some work into it and learn from it..
To many these days expect to walk into a shop, buy the radio, hook up a $5 2 foot ant mount it incorrectly cause some guy said this n that and come out of the truck stop thinkin they will talk for 100 miles....

Another part of the issue is that those of us that were trained in the military to work on high end military equipment built with tight tolerances lack the skills necessary
to achieve similar results with this cheap Chinese garbage built with sloppy tolerances.

Because I've put people like you to the test. Challenging people like you to make a radio identical to mine perform, exactly like mine and people like you could never do it.
You've even admitted as much in several posts. I'm smart enough to recognize my limitations. I wouldn't even attempt it.

Ok, the statement is a bit … well an assumption.

    So you calling me stupid?

I forgot more than you know.

I know my limitations but I also know when to let others do the work so I can do other things.

I have heard your radio, but have you heard mine?

you think I want to have my cb sound like yours?

    it isn’t important.

I don’t post videos, but you can hear it sometimes on 3885, 1900, or 29.150.

have you ever read and thought about what I said?

I chase your posts because others get more out of them when there is a differing opinion and not an ad for services from a clown.

Oh by the way, for four years I worked for a contractor doing repairs on avionics and secured communications systems for the navy. I was part of their retrofitting program. I have never saw a navy tech do component level repairs, it was always P&R and the outside contractors did the CL repairs and any other maintenance.
