I have been a boater for a long time and have used a small solar panel to keep the batteries up. Does anyone use solar to power or run anything on their trucks?

Like you use it to charge your truck batteries? Or like a small double A batteries...cell phone..etc
-
Your truck won't ever sit long enough to require this. If it does, you ain't making no money and won't be able to afford the charger.
tscottme, truckthatpassesyouby and Pmracing Thank this. -
They may be good for keeping a single battery charged enough when sitting for a time, but I doubt it would help much in the truck - unless it was for a home time or something and nothing was left plugged in.
I've seen the solar battery chargers. If I ever have a vehicle that stays at a terminal between home times I'll be using one. -
One driver posted a few months ago, with pictures, and had those flexible solar panels stuck on top of the cab. Don't know where he got them, maybe Google knows.
Probably could put on on the dash or fairing on top of cab.
He didn't remove them and kept them on there even when driving.Rock 'n Roll Relocater Thanks this. -
I am not experienced in the challenges of weight but I am thinking I might mount a separate battery to run food prep equipment off of using solar power to keep the battery up. There is also the possibility of warming water for hygiene the same way. Maybe none of this is necessary. Just some of the things swimming around in my head.
With regards to weight, are there limits set to a driver's personal property carried on the truck?
I know, rookie s*** but I got nothing better to do until I leave for training. -
If your truck won't start after sitting for a week, you have a bad battery in the bank or some draw on it. If that draw is bad enough to drain them in a week, 10 solar chargers won't help.

Carry as much junk as you want, but it's a pain if you have to switch trucks due to breakdown or something.
Melton Truck Lines and System Transport have Apu's on the trucks so with these companies you won't need an extra battery for cooking etc.
With Apu you can shut the truck engine off and crank up the Apu for electrical power for computer, tv, cooking etc. Will also have heat and air conditioning without running the truck engine.Rock 'n Roll Relocater and TruckerVinny Thank this. -

The solar chargers are only a very low trickle charge.
They won't heat water, and they won't compensate very much for a QC turning on every 2 hours.
The only limit on weight is what you can fit in that tiny cab, and space is limited.
But if you add too much, you may be limited on your gross weight with very heavy loads.
How much of your space and weight are you willing to give, just to add more garbage that you don't really need?
