Do you use 12-point sockets for torx bolts, or an actual female torx socket? What about spline sockets?

That depends how tight they are. If not too tight you might get away with that. I have and use torx sockets

The proper name for the socket is "inverted torx" I have a set made by Cornwell. MBE900 flywheel bolts are inverted torx.

Yup. I have a set of snappy inverted torx wrenches too.

Paccar started using them on engine mount bolts. E20 socket. Had to order that one.

Never been a fan of the spline sockets for the attempt at fits all.

I use amazon prime. If I need a big socket or tool I don’t have when I’m working on truck I get what I need next day through amazon prime

At the risk of being sac religious in the mechanics section.
    Harbor freight carriers them.
Even though I have always known them as inverted torx I think harbor freight calls them E torx.

I’m not going to lie, I have used a 6-point and 12-point socket on them before, but it was never quite right, and I had problems especially around exhaust systems. So I bought the snap-on inverted torx set.... and regretted it almost immediately..... and every week after till they were paid off..... But then again, I always leave that truck with a sunken heart....

The right socket is really handy to have though....

Ahhh the woes of mechanic’s... such a regretful creature...
