So it was coming down the grapevine this afternoon, I was set up to perfectly do 30 but the truck in front of me in the right lane decided 20 since I was already in 7 and I realized just how quick I was gaining on him after starting down I had to start using some brake. No problem really until it came time to exit for the petro at the bottom, because they have that exit still going slightly downgrade with a sharp turn, so I really applies the brakes to get around that corner and white smoke comes out from the drive axles. Got it into the truck stop and waited for 10 or 20 minutes until the smoke stopped, then enough to convince myself there was nothing burning.
I'll probably call my company training guy in the morning to ask, since I can't really remember from training the answer to this and never needed to know since I haven't had any problems with passes before, is it safe to drive after everything has cooled down? I'm going to be at least 16 hours off duty due to my delivery time and location.....
So first time overheating brakes

yes your good to keep driving after the brakes have cooled down, i have had smoked my trailer brakes before, let them cool off and your good to go
-
You will be fine but the drums will probably be warped a bit meaning when you firmly hit the brakes again while going down the highway or coming to a stop your steering wheel may jiggle back and forth.

the guy going slow in front of you is irrelevant. You need to be going less then 20 to safely male the turn and you may even need to stop. Get in a lower gear for the hill, especially if you knew you were stopping at the petro coming up. This is the kind of mistake that can get you killed. Smoking brakes may or may not stop you. Over used brakes dont work well and you could have rolled your truck or jit a car while trying to stop. Take this seriously.. there is a reason the other truck was geared to hold 20mph down the hill. With less then a year of experience did you really think it was ok to go faster down the hill then the other truck? Learn from your mistake before you kill someone. Weather the truck is now safe to drive is the least of your problems.
Although, you probaly just cost your company 1000 bucks. Its safe to drive, but you likley warped the drums. Warped drums accelerate ware and the drums will need to be replaced.DoneYourWay, gpsman and Highway Hypnosis Thank this. -
Hmmmmm
How far ahead of you was this truck going 20 ?
What was the down hill speed limit ?
And why was only white smoke coming from drive tires ? Are the trailer brakes adjusted right ?
I bet you remember next time huh ?.
gpsman and "semi" retired Thank this. -
Guess so. I've been doing 30 down that each time, never before had an issue, guess I'll need to do 6 at 20mph. The trailer brakes are adjusted correctly. Checked that during post trip. -

Ok so you didnt know that the guy was gonna be there..
I would just keep that exit speed in the back of my mind for next time .. -
Yeah I've done that before many times, usually though I've gotten down the pass without ever touching brakes, usually 7 and full jake keep the truck going at a slow speed. This is usually always where I stop leaving LA
Usually I go down in 30 and the speed limit is 35 never had any issues, I don't blame the guy ahead of me for anything or hold animosity against him, I just had to use the foot brake to keep behind since land changes on that particular pass going down are something I didn't want to do. -
No big deal, happens all the time on Grapevine. I've been down it several times grossing right at 80K and no jake brake. Get some smoke of the trailer brake shoes, but nothing to worry about.
James j and snowlauncher Thank this.
