if you're chains are properly sized for your tires, and if your chains are not "worn out" and/or you have a substantial amount of tread remaining, I'd say you can probably run without bungies, IF they are properly installed and have no "issues" as some chains do. If you've never run chains before, I don't recommend you attempt this, especially in the dark.

I have the cam-lock style chains. I never use bungees.

Its all I've ever seen even through the Siskiyou's up to Juneau...as one good ol' trucker shouted out "Bungees are for idiots that want to jump off bridges".
I'll take his word for it...

They are also for my tarps, otherwise, my tarps would end up spread across your windshield!

Clarification: he was referring to chaining up. Still use the cam locks hauling the 5er, have never used anything else.
As for flying tarps...its flying anything I've watched for and been able to dodge. Guess they call that defensive drivin' or something like that.

I think all there is cam locks. If you got non cam locks there probably older than dirt and rusted out. They'll start breaking links then your SOL. Word of advice don't hang chains only to dry then put them in your storage box. They'll rust the hell out if you keep them hanged all the time. Then next season your not on the side of the mountain with broken links spinning out. My company I always grab new set chains to start the season but I know not everyone can do that but if you can grab a new set.

I know what he was refering to and my opinion is bungees are worthless on tire chains. Cam locks are the only way to go and a chain key that is strong enough to stand up to my 18 inch cheater bar! :yes2557:
