I'm driving a converted thomas school bus with some musicians from chicago to boston. I'm driving Indiana, Ohio -- thought I'd buy a pair of snow chains for my 11R22.5 tires but was surprised to find no truck stops in ohio or indiana sell snow chains! Half of the folks on the phone say that snow chains are illegal... one guy said none of the trucks run snow chains in these states.... is that true? I drive out in Washington normally.

You don't need snow chains in the Midwest, there is not that much snow over here.
If you get stuck anywhere, just have those musicians push you outaustinmike, runningman0661, 86scotty and 7 others Thank this. -
The midwest gets their share of snow, you just have different terrain from the west. You don't have to deal with the steep grades that much except in Pennsylvania, Virginia, or upstate New York as an example. Those states will just #### everything down.
austinmike, lual and Mattflat362 Thank this. -
Chains aren’t illegal everywhere in the Midwest on snow packed roads, but they are seldom used like they are in the mountains. The places they are illegal is to keep idiots from running chains on dry pavement. A chain of some sort will get you unstuck even in a few inches of snow. I carry something similar to this emergency ratchet strap in the winter months. It is only to be used temporarily, generally somewhere that someone would have to come to a complete stop on a slight incline and couldn’t gain traction again. Many school buses and ambulances have an automatic chain slinger and if you were running New York State on a regular basis would definitely be very useful except in really deep snow.
silverspur, Hammer166 and lual Thank this. -
I live here I've seen people with chains on maybe a dozen times ever and the required situations were zero. Noone is going to leave those in inventory because some meth head will steal them. -
Fleetpride should have them in stock for that size. I just went through this last week. I needed 11R24.5 and you have thought I was asking for a spare brain.
Finally found a truck parts store that stocked them.bzinger, D.Tibbitt, austinmike and 1 other person Thank this. -
You don’t need chains. If it snows slow down.
lual Thanks this. -
Don't worry around here...they put enough salt down to litterally EAT cars and trucks whether needed or not. Just have to sit for a hour or 2 if it is really really bad out. Either it will change quickly or the salt will kick in and make everything filthy and corroded.
bzinger, austinmike, jamespmack and 2 others Thank this. -
I would not spend money on chains if running Midwest. Pennsylvania will close the roads if a big storm is coming. Ohio will do the same thing. Out west they are like 18 inches of snow is coming, ok just chain up and keep going. Out west they don't use salt on roads. Midwest The start putting salt and liquid stuff on roads before the snow starts
