I have NOT started yet and I am scheduled for orientation next week for the McCalla, AL Dedicated HD account...

I've spoken with some people that are DBL??? at the Acct. I am looking for some home time throughout the week because my Mom has a brain tumor and is hospitalized on and off...I know you have to drive to make money but I was trying to ger a feel of the account prior to going: My question is:

    1. I am based outta Birmingham, AL ...whats the best way to get more home time throughout the week?

    2. Does coming in Early Mon (2am) help? if so whats the "typical" week for someone that comes in early?

    3. So if I leave out 4am and get off about 6pm (14 hrs later) i guess I can go home to do my 10 hrs and return by 4am?

Any info about how the week is set up for home time barring any unloading issues!!! THANKS

I will do the best I can. I am a little different situation. I live in Atlanta and run out of there. Starting early will always help you. It is still trucking and there are always issues. It may not do much for your miles but I am sure they would be happy to work with you.

    1. In my opinion keep it local. There is plenty of local work, it just dont pay enough for me.

2.Coming in early will help. HD loads become ready around the clock. If your assigned one that is ready that early coming in early is great. You have make sure the load is ready and start your 14. As long as your legal, they will work with you.

    3. That is correct. An example. You start at 4. You have two stops ending in Flowery Branch by 12. You reload an hour away. And you could easily be finished by 6. Each day is different, the outbound and the inbound.

Based from McCalla and living locally I would think you could be home often during the week. It just wont help much on the miles.

Basically, nothing is structured on this account. Each day will be different. The dbl are good to work with. If you can be flexible and worhwork with them, they will work with you.

    Welcome aboard!

    Hope to see you around.

Just saw your post, you are in for a big surprise! I was on this account Schneider/McCalla Home Depot since the start in December 2012, I left a few weeks ago. Here are the answers to your questions:

    1. Forget that, no home time through the week!
    2. Comming in early is required through the week.
    3. If you can get your back haul picked up and get back before your 14 expires you are lucky! But if you do, then you can take your 10 at home.

Here's what you have to look forward to: DBL's are Mike, Angel & Chandnie, op's mgr John Babbs, a real prick! When you arrive to pick up your load you will wait in line between 20min to 40 min to get through security and in the gate. Proceed around the building to the dispatch office, pick up your paper work then find your pre-loaded trailer, hook up then proceed back around the building and wait another 20-40 min to get out of the gate. Proceed to the Atlanta metro area. About 70% of outbound for company drivers go to Atlanta but the trailers are pre-loaded. Once in Atlanta, find your Home Depot store, wait on any flatbeds or other trailers on the dock to get unloaded then spot your trailer. Wait about 2 hours to get unloaded. Once your unloaded, proceed to your backhaul customer, could be anywhere from 30 miles to 80 miles, for a live load. My average wait on a live backhaul load was about 3 hours. Depending on the time of day in Atlanta, traffic most of the time will prevent you from making it back to McCalla before your 14 expires. The only way you can make it back to McCalla that day is to get a backhaul off I20 headed back to McCalla where you can miss the traffic. Otherwise you will have to put down for your 10 somewhere on I20 between 285 in Atlanta and the Pilot in Lincoln, AL. (I20 at Hwy 231) If you get lucky and make it back to McCalla, then it's a drop, all backhauls to McCalla are drop's. If you can't make it back before your 14 expires then your whole week is screwed from there! This happens about 50% of the time! If you don't make it back until the next day then you won't make it to the building until the 06:00-07:00 range when you will then have to wait more than an hour to get in and out of the gate. This makes your next load have to be a local dispatch because you won't be able to make it back to Atlanta with a load because it will be late. When you get a local dispatch, you still have to wait 1 hour to get in and 1 hour to get out of the gate, go to the local Home Depot, wait 2 hours to get unloaded which blows 3/4 of the day. Your pay for this local load is $0.38 per mile for 30-40 miles, thats it! No short haul pay! You will average between 1600 to 1800 miles per week with bring home pay of about $400 and you WILL use almost ALL of your 70 clock! Since I left before July 1st I don't know how their doing the 34 resets with the new regs that took effect on July 1st but you are only expected to take 10 hours on your break, NOT 10.5 hours OR 11 hours! They would not let you take a lunch break before July 1st, so I don't know how they are doing that now, but one thing for sure, these pricks MUST NOW MAKE you take your 30 min break! Thats funny, LMAO!!! They are NOT flexable on hometime, you get it when you get it! Hope this don't deflate your balloon and I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions! Best of Luck to you!

Man, I'd been curious about some of the dedicated accounts for a while but reading from what some of ya'll are posting I think I'm just going to be happy sticking with OTR LOL. Not stuck in the same traffic all the time, not stuck waiting for the same slow customer to load and unload all the time, and most of all I've never been bothered by dispatch for taking a longer than 10 hour break, etc. I never complain to them about my loads or where I'm going, and they seem to be showing me the same respect. I figure as long as I put in a decent amount of miles for the day and get the load to its destination on time, I'm doing my job and that's good enough for them.
