The FMCSA does not have any regs concerning Sleep Apnea. Get a letter from the dentist and show it at your next physical.

As far as AHI, 5.0 and under is considered treated.

My wife, whom is not a trucker, was given an at home sleep monitor many years ago. When the results came back she was told she needed a machine to help her breathe at night. She used it for several months and said it didn't seem to have any effect on her sleep or health. Fast-forward several years later she went to a sleep study clinic for an overnight stay. The tests were quite thorough and when the results came back they found ZERO abnormalities in her sleep behavior. Case closed.

Hopefully the home tests have improved some.

I'm going to take another one in April.

I think a sleep lab is more accurate but they are more expensive. I went to sleep lab. Once they seen I had sleep apnea. They tried regular cpap with one pressure setting. They said I did not go into rem sleep. So they hooked me up to Bipap. That’s a cpap with two pressure settings one to breathe in and other to breathe out. Then I went into REM sleep. Unless they updated them most home test they see if someone had sleep apnea and then give them a autoset cpap and it can change the pressure as someone is sleeping. It only has 1 pressure and it can change that as someone sleeps. I find it can feel like you’re not getting enough air and you wake up, because the autoset cpap can lower the pressure. Someone can change the settings and stop that or set it for the same pressure all night. I had good experience going to sleep lab even though you don’t really sleep much. They did get the correct pressure setting for me

It must be the neck size thing. In 13 years as a trucker I have never been required or even asked to take one.

If I make a circle with my thumbs and middle fingers and place it around my neck, it barely touches my skin.
I've never thought to do that before just now. What are the results if you all do it?

I think if a driver is diagnosed with sleep apnea and truly doesn't feel that it's necessary to have a breathing apparatus at night, a second opinion should be warranted, along with more thorough tests to be certain. We seem to live in a CPAP happy society. Especially in the industry...
