Why do we need trucking schools?
Seems to me it's easier finding a trucker that will teach you and pay him 100 dollars per week or so, and maybe join him on a 'trip' ... learn more about it..
and then get your CDL Permit, drive his truck for him "Without saying anything to dispatch" and then once ready, you can get a appointment for your CDL License?

This seems so much cheaper and less of a headache of signing your 'pocket' away...

    Makes sense to me?

Trucking Company's want you to have experience driving trucks right?
not about what school you went to?

Cant you just do the same as you would of getting Class C license?

You can but, remember when you're dealing with the bigger companies, they have a lot of corporate policies that aren't necessarily grounded in the real world.

The bottom line is that you play by their rules or you don't play in their playground.

However look at it this way, the school trains you to get a CDL - don't expect a whole lot more. Time with a trainer is usually what gives you a foundation as a driver.

BTW - read the Skyway post carefully. I got exactly what I wanted and pretty much what I paid for. I also discussed them with some of the major carriers i.e. Werner, Schnieder, Gordon and, W&S. All of them accepted Skyway as an entry level training program.

Make your decision based on what you think YOUR needs are, not just cost.

If I were you, in your position, I would visit each school and look at exactly what is being taught on the practice range and in the classroom. Also try to get an idea of exactly how much time behind the wheel you'll get. Some of the cheaper schools will send you to the DMV with as little time as they can.

One thing to be warry of is that some schools are mills for the mega-carriers.

I think that United is tied up pretty tight with Swift and Roadmaster in Fontana (you left them off the list) is completely wrapped up with Werner. So much so that their school location is inside Werner's Fontana terminal.

    Good luck.
