I recently purchased a pair of skipshooter antennas. 1. they don't scream out "I'm running a linear" but they can and will hold the wattage! 2. they're top loaded 3. they're reasonably priced.
They tuned up really good and worked just as an antenna should, HOWEVER they can't handle the wind load of highway speeds. I35e N/B 72 MPH towards Dallas I heard a thump on the passenger side, at my stop I noticed I was missing the passenger side antenna so I climbed up to unhook the coax and stud, then I noticed the antenna snapped off in the stud. I wrote it off as driver error, maybe I hit a tree branch or clipped a bird. Well Yesterday I 55 s/b just before West Memphis AR I watched in shock, horror and anger as the driver side antenna snapped off at 64 MPH. Same thing it broke off in the stud. I'm NOT posting this to bash, discredit or defame the maker of these antennas I'm just sharing my personal experience. It's unfortunate too because I bought them because they're inconspicuous and don't attract unwanted attention, they're tunable, they come in the color to match my paint, they're rated for the wattage I'm running, and i believed them to be reasonably priced. I for one hope they address and correct this

Now if the antenna itself broke in half then yes it would be Skipshooters fault......... -
I'd contact SkipShooter. They may replace them. I use to run them for a few years. And I found them to be one of the best antennas made. It's sad how prodpucts change.

Sorry I guess I should of clarified, The threaded part of the antennas that screws into the stud is where the antennas snapped off. I sent off an email and am awaiting a response, in the meantime I'm using a back-up 3' Wilson until I find a suitable replacement. Gotta do some research

SkipShooter sticks were the rage back in the day, with the movement of stainless steel they went by the wayside due to superior quality and performance of stainless steel antennas.
Nothing has changed since, stainless steel or nothing IMO -
Cut you a piece of pvc and paint it black slide out over the antenna to minimize the wind impact

Blast from the past thread here.

Yup..When i ran my 7ft skip shooters i cut some indoor water pvc pipe that had the inside diameter almost the same as the od of skip shhoter...The first 2' of my skipshooter was covered....It takes away some of the flex at the base and they last wayy longer....
Now seeing op was running two i can assume it was either a 4 or 5' ant so i would cut say a 6" or 8" length for ant flex.....
Nothin can be done if your hittin trees with them..
Not sure how much they can handle power wise but i wouldnt push more than 300 or 500 watts max before you start burnin them up...
Skip shooter antenna,i lovem...
