    Hi everyone,

How important is skid control training as a new transport driver. Im in the process of choosing a school and one school offers and the other says its obsolete. The exact quote is..."It's obsolete now that all trucks are fitted with traction control and anti-skid technology. Only one place "teaches" it and it's an add-on after you get your licence."

Would it be true to say you will never run into skid problems now? Thanks for any help, always appreciated TR community :)

    Lepton1 Thanks this.

That would be a big fat false.

I don't know that you need skid training but it certainly wouldn't hurt.

I used a skid course in our patrol cars but anything besides a car is crazy even for an SUV

Learn how to drive so you don't slide around. Turn off the cruise control and use power with respect when slippery. The driving lane is about 11 feet wide, a skid pad is much wider. All the technology on a truck does not replace a trained driver. Probably an exercise on the skid pad might help you react in that split second if a skid happens. You can always skid in slippery conditions, you also need to understand the systems that are on the vehicle and their capability.

I don't think highly controlled skid training can prepare you for real-world issues you may find yourself in. Especially for tractor-trailer application.

That said, it may provide some help to learn certain dynamics of heavy trucks with a joint in the middle and how they CAN get squirrely, and to learn some of the things NOT to do.
