Has anyone attempted removing and replacing the crank gear, timing and crank adapter? After about 14 hours we got them off, now it’s time to put them back on. Cummins says to heat them in an hours and they should slide back on. Any thoughts?

If you are about ISX front gear follow the Cummins manual. If you don't have one specific for your engine go to Cummins Inc. :: QuickServe Online to create free account with engine number. Enjoy step by step how it to do.

Was not a Cummins but I recently but bearing in a hard to get spot like that. The book said to heat it to 100 degrees Celsius for one hour. I had reservations but it went right on.

Follow procedure to a tee. It must be hot and at least at the spec temp throughout or hotter and in an oven for at least a half day prior to setting. I had Cummins come to the shop to do one once and the guy tried too early at it wasn't hot enough. The gear locked to the crank half way on and he had to order parts and start the drilling removal process all over. Bummer.......
Take your time, make sure the crank is nick and burr free. Make for darn sure that the gear is at temp throughout before slapping it on. Have some good welding gloves too. I'd have to look but I think the temp is around 500*FSAR, BoxCarKidd and spsauerland Thank this. -

Hey, whatever works..........JohnC123 Thanks this. -
Done a few. Just did one. 500 deg., as suggested by Cummins, not enough. I use a infared, propane BBQ grill. Takes a whole tank of propane and about 5-6 hours to get it purple and around 750-800 degrees. Gear is easy. Adapter is the b%#@h!! Roll the grill next to truck. Welding gloves not quite enough. Use rags also. Trust me. You only get 5-10 seconds to complete task. Have a hammer ready to help tap on. Adapter went from 750 to 450 in less than 10 seconds. The heat transferred all of the way thru the gear train enough that you could not touch the cam gear in that 10 seconds. You will get a couple of blisters. Worth it if you can accomplish the first time!
Heavyd, BoxCarKidd and JohnC123 Thank this.
