Should you stop at railroad crossings, even if not required by law?

    As for the OP, don't make up your own rules, just follow the existing ones. It makes it much easier on everyone else.

    For sure you should be looking as you approach any level crossing, just as you should as you approach intersections.

    It's 60 days suspension for first offense, per DOT if you don't slow down enough to come to a controlled stop if needed..

    Not to mention the fine directed to the driver and even larger fine to company if convicted

    You also have to worry about Hirail trucks,some do not have good shunts and will not bring the gates down until you are stopped at the crossing.

    Here in Maine if your hauling any type of fuel oil your to stop at ALL train crossings. At least that is what the 3 companies told me when I applied to them.
