Been wanting to get a little bit more involved in painting, and also tossing around the idea of a pot style sand blaster to run off my shop air compressor. Both of those activities require clean dry air. True proper air compressor dryers are quite expensive.
Was thinking about getting a nice simple Bendix AD-SP air dryer, mounting it so that I only run air through it when I'm after good clean dry air, and saving myself a lot of money by using some ingenuity. Aside from figuring a way to trigger the purge valve this seems pretty straightforeward. Can any of you guys think of anything I am missing here?

Well, run a signal line from the tank to the air governor, close out the air governor outlet which isn't going to the air dryer.
E model Cat man Thanks this. -
I thought of something similar before. I think a ad9 flows more and has a higher duty cycle. I know they are a pain to change compared to a sp. I also saw a nitrogen pumper that used alot of air and It had a dual sp setup to cut down the duty cycle with a valve from bendix to spit each dryer alternately. If you look in there literature it shows the valve needed to spit each one separately.

I have no idea what kind of cfm the mentioned air dryer is capable of.. but what is the cfm of your compressor? Will it work with the size nozzle you are planning?
My experience says that if you don't at least double the recommended cfm, you will be gravely disappointed. -
I have a 2015 kenworth t660. Air compressor kicks on builds to 130 purges then goes back to about 115 kicks back on builds up purges. It does this every two miles loaded empty or bobtailing. Changed air cartridge and put on new leveling valve which were no help. Any ideas would be great. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you may have a leak. Put shop air to discharge line off of compressor so you can build air up without the motor running and listen for leaks. If none are found you might have a leak on a turbo actuator or control. Not sure what engine you have. If this is the case you can run truck and take a spray bottle of water/soap mix and spray around turbo and control to check for leaks.

I've thought of this too. Maybe vent the purge outside but then you have to prevent freezing

I bought a air deflector and installed it on my Dryer. Took care of dust problem. Good product.

Both compressors had basic air dryers on them, the shop compressor has a harbor freight basic air dryer.
I had issues with the sand clogging and kept trying smaller sand until i used black beauty, when i switched over to BB it was late in the day and it worked so well i worked into the dark and noticed sparks were coming off the machine where i was blasting!
I will never go back to basic sand, it was a 25 Ton Cat haul truck "ADT"
When i painted it i used a in line filter and i didn't have any issues with moisture and changes the filter every gallon or so.
I also purchased a harbor freight 2.5 gallon pot with the 20' lines and spray gun, best purchase i ever had doing paint work on frames and equipment, you can spary upside down and don't have to worry about the gun sucking air, had to change the guages because the lenses were plasing and fogged up after cleaning with acetone, still works and not bad for $165.00 investment.
