Hi everyone,
I am doing a little research for a problem I have with my 98 international 9400 with DD Series 60 DDEC 4.
My driver went off to the mechanic to get the truck safetied. I then get a call that after leaving the mechanics the truck is running rough and throwing no codes. After popping by the see my rig at the mecahnics I noticed a good amount of black smoke puffing out the tail pipe and refused to believe the issue was ECU related or had anything to do with the return line check valve at the back of the head.
So up to now I have replaced the injector harness as I believe I was getting a short in the wires. plus wires at the ECU were damaged. I replaced the return valve since I had a new one ready to go. I still am getting dark grey smoke. I disconnected the charge pipe at the turbo and found wet oil in the pipe, but no oil in the pipe going to the manifold. After disconnecting the manifold pipe I started up the truck and the smoke got more dark with a distinct diesel smell to it.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be going on ? I want to bring the truck to the local detroit diesel mechanic shop but there booked for the next 2 weeks. Im getting cylinder cut out and injector response reading, could a ECU cause this ?
series 60 black smoke

I think you blew the Turbo, should not be oil inside pipe to CAC.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
i just replaced my trubo becuase of oil in pipe going to cac. No black smoke was visible from the stacks however. i found oil just from working on something else. Depends on severity. Mine was just a very slight mist. I guess if you have a major leak, it well belch black smoke. Probably injectors.

The turbo is in rough shape, I found the wastegate is seized. for the price of replacing it Im just going to get a BW S400 for it. But when the turbo pipe from the intercooler to manifold was disconnected smoke at idle got worse. So I guess I can be injectors. Im going to have a different shop take a look at it.
I just couldnt accept the previous mechanics advice that the ecu or return valve went bad.
And the turbo looks like its been leaking for a while, not a new leak so I dont think that engine oil is being burned.
ohhh sorry and I other major point. When I go to shut the engine off, the motor will diesel on me. It will actually keep running abit. It did that to me my first start up at the mechanics, when I went to shut the truck off and the motor kept spinning, run away popped into my head in a split second. -
pop pop pop pop chuchuchu when turned off is not ever good. Remember where your fuel kill valves are in the tanks where they feed. Be ready to kill the #### thing if it runs away.
Especially if you go through pop, chus and turn into a rapidly escalating clakclakclak...
When she roars starve the #### thing quick.
Bean Jr., Cam Roberts and wiseman89 Thank this. -
THIS, I know with smaller motors you can cover the turbo but there no time for that with a rig. Thanks for mentioning that, I will take a look for that.

I think you have injector issues. If it's running on after shutting the key off then it's still slobbering fuel.
That's why its smoking. It's over fueling and slobbering fuel in. Possible cracked injector tip.QUALITYTRUCK and wiseman89 Thank this. -
I will take it in and let you guys know. Whats a good source for rebuilds ? I heard factory rebuilt ones from detroit diesel arnt that good.

I'd just get a 6 pack from Detroit. They will come with a good warrenty, should be just fine.
I wouldn't run it as you could blow a hole in a piston with that bad fueling.Bean Jr. and Cam Roberts Thank this.
