Hey there,
I've been lurking in the shadows for quite a while and have learned a lot of good information from these forums. (Finally, a forum that's still active)
I'm working on buying a septic pumping company in Rural Colorado. The old-timer I'm buying it from knows the ins and outs of the work, but unfortunately dementia is taking his knowledge of the business side of things. So I have a few questions that I've been unable to get answers from searching state sites, other forums, etc. Hopefully you all can assist me with some answers.
1. Are Haz-Mat endorsements required for human waste? I'm aware a tanker endorsement is, but can't find a clear answer for the Haz-mat. I'm assuming they aren't as I don't see where waste falls into any of the 9 hazmat classes.
2. Any special business license required to operate in Colorado? I'm actually a licensed master plumber, so I'm quite familiar with the DORA process, just need a clear answer here as well.
3. Any special insurance/bonding required? Once again, as a plumber I carry general liability insurance to protect my company in the chance something goes south.
I've had many questions come up over the course of getting this deal finalized, but these are the big ones that have been eating at me. I appreciate any information I can get, as well as any tips and hints anyone can provide.
Thanks!

What does his business records show? He should be filing yearly with the local county/state so that might lead to some clues -
Thanks for the link Mark, but that page is related to the actual septic systems rather than regulations for hauling.
He's pretty old-school, so getting records has kind of been like pulling teeth, and he's got dentures haha. Hopefully all records will surface soon, but these questions have just been itching me like crazy. -

Definitely a place to start. Our county is a bit of a joke as far as records are concerned as well but it's worth a shot.
Thanks! -
I don't know about business licenses but I know you don't need a HazMat endorsement. I've been in the septic business for the past couple of years.
Mooseontheloose and JoryDBlack Thank this. -

Your insurance broker should answer the insurance questions, in addition to auto and general liability; I'd want some robust environmental coverage in case something goes amiss on the road resulting in a cleanup.
