I am about to sell my truck and need to know what paperwork needs to be completed between the buyer and seller for a smooth sale and transfer of ownership of the vehicle. This will be the first vehicle I have ever sold and I am lacking in the knowledge department on this one. I can't seem to find anything online specifically about selling class 8 trucks. Do I just sign over the title and that's it? Do I need a bill of sale or a release of liability form or a transfer of ownership form or anything?
Selling a Truck, what paperwork is needed for seller and buyer?

You need make sure you write up the bill of sale with the info @99kw900 indicated above. Especially the sale price. You may need this documentation for income tax purposes.

you need the signed title. A copy of the past year's Fed Highway Use tax, bill of sale.
OH YEAH in New Jersey any truck registered in NJ with IRP plates has the title locked until the seller sends in an IRP supplemental form to delete the truck from his IRP account and freeing the title for transfer...
This has been an issue since NJ joined the IRP, kicking and screaming with Rhode Island as the last two states to join the program thanks to the Federal arm twisting. I don't know why NJ did this other than just being New Jersey....bzinger, Scooter Jones and Roteck Thank this. -
Definitely make up a bill of sale as indicated above. In Pennsylvania, even with a signed bill of sale, since you have to sign the title in front of a notary, the transfer isn't complete until the purchaser also signs in front of a notary. In other words, it is still your vehicle until the title transfer is complete. If the leave the purchaser section blank you could be liable if the vehicle is involved in an accident. Don't know if other states have the same requirement.
Of course if you are a licensed dealer, there are places on the title to transfer between dealers before the final sale. -
"As-Is" documents ...

I have never provided anything beyond the signed title that was notorized. These were clean titles free and clear.
A used vehicle is always sold “as is” unless otherwise noted.
My experience is specific to class 8 trucks sold in Ohio -
Put date and time on "as is" sales documents.
Roteck Thanks this.
