I'm trying to use self drilling screws knowns as Tek to attach wood flooring to semi trailer instead of the regular screws..see pics below. The regular screws will take for ever to drill them through the trailer metals. Have anyone use a self-drilling screw to do flooring before?

Did two trailers with the black ones.
Ended up pre drilling a hole with drill bit and went much better.
If you are using a battery powered drill have plenty of batteries charged,
Hammer drill works best on the screws.
Their is also the Bear claw decking fastener that work well in some applications.

I dont think the self drilling screws metal is hard enough to go thru the trailer metal, the way i did mine was using two drills with two sizes drill bits to drill a pre hole while lubricating with wd 40 to cool and preserve the sharpness of the bits, once all the holes are done i used an impact gun to drive the screws in.

Teks are Phillips head, so if you don't predrill the holes you're going to strip out the head. I've used them on a small bridge we have going over a drainage creek. Once the head strips out, your day just got worse.

The self drilling screws will dull too fast or snap. When I replaced flooring and bought like 150 of the screws they gave me 2 drill bits.

Yes I went ahead and get 2 drill today. Plus 100 . Trailer Deck Screws 1/4-20 2" Torx T30 1/2.
But the drills are just for the woods. I finally drilled through the trailer metals but just don't know what drill bit size to use.

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.

Use a bit just smaller than the screw head...
Dunk the screw tip in a bottle of Anti seize

    Rideandrepair and Ruthless Thank this.

Contact the manufacturer of the deck screws you bought for a drill bit size. You should be use'in self "Tapping" torx head screws.
One size drill bit to drill through the deck material and through the trailer steel.

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.

The drill bit is just a tad smaller than the screw "shaft" ---not the screw head.

    MAMservices and Rideandrepair Thank this.
