My husband is currently not driving OTR (his company sold out and he doesn't care for new owners). He is thinking about working locally as a school bus driver. His medical certification is expiring in a couple months, and it's our understanding that he could certify as Excepted Interstate as a school bus driver. Can he do that if he is not currently working as a school bus driver but intends to later? We are planning on him taking off for at least a few months to get things done around the farm and house and to take a vacation.

What if he later decides to go back OTR, will he just have to get his medical certification and recertify to the state? We are in MISSOURI.

That's what I did in Georgia.

But it might be different there in Missouri.

You would be likely be best served by taking your questions to a Missouri Dept of Motor Vehicles office.

It's part of their job to help with questions like that.

The med card is a federal requirement, so it would be the same from state to state. You can switch to EA or EI ( difference is interstate vs. intrastate ) any time you wish by simply filling out a form. This will put the med card requirement on "hold" while retaining your CDL. People do this frequently for reasons such as can't pass physical, break from driving, or other change in needs. To reverse, simply submit a new physical and fill out the form again.

Thank you both for taking the time to respond to my questions. We'll go to the license bureau Monday and get it taken care of.

Just an update: We went to the license bureau today and changed his certification today without problem. Had to pay $6 and we were good to go.

Wish I understood that better. Just had to do mine. Regular Dr couldn't get me in so went to a urgent care. Ended up with a 1 year because my BP was high. It was just over the mark because I didn't like the environment, I was in.. But kid wouldn't listen. I also was nursing shoulder rehab and was worried about passing but I did ok there Never thought I could downgrade. Way I was told if you downgrade Mass will downgrade your license too and you may need to retake the testing again for your CDL.

I self-certified here in NC, when I took a leave of absence to care for wife.

ended retiring when she passed, but still retain CDL w/K restriction. intrastate only.
