Hi all, This is my first post but I've been looking all day & can't seem to find any answers...

    2012 law reads:
The Secretary (Illinois) shall notify the driver of his or her non-certified status and that his or her CDL will be canceled unless the driver submits a current medical examiner's certificate or medical variance or changes his or her self-certification to driving only in excepted or intrastate commerce.

99.9% of our business is in Illinois & most of it is dump truck driving.
How do I instruct our drivers to do their self-certification?

    Medical Card

Most operators of commercial motor vehicles with a gross motor vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or greater are required to carry a Medical Examiner's Certificate with them at all times while operating a second division vehicle. In addition, these drivers are required to maintain files that contain written test verification, road test verification and other records.
Effective January 30th 2012 any individual applying for a renewal, corrected, duplicate or upgrading to a Commercial Drivers license (CDL) that individual must certify as which category of driver you are or intend to be. The (4) four choices are:
    1. Non-excepted interstate driver (NI)
    2. Excepted interstate driver (EI)
    3. Non-excepted intrastate driver (NA)
    4. Excepted intrastate driver (EA)
If you choose #1 option then your current DOT Medical Card must be given to the facility employees prior to be allowed to continue. All pertinent medical information which we need from your medical card will be loaded onto your driver's file.

If you choose any other numbered option the individual will be allowed to be processed.

If you are unsure please check with your employer or prospective employer as to which option you should choose.

The employees of the office of the Illinois Secretary of State cannot nor will not have this information as to which category you intend to drive in.
The Office of the Secretary of State is not responsible for regulating or enforcing these regulations and does not have the forms that are necessary for compliance with the regulations. Enforcement is the responsibility of the Illinois State Police. For further information regarding an IDOT Medical Card, please contact the Illinois Department of Transportation, phone (217) 785-1181.
