Looking for some thoughts on this, 500 hours on tripac evolution, apu alternator sending 16 volts and cooked my year old batteries, I replaced them and the alternator was tested and replaced under warranty. Last night I'm watching TV and my xantrex inverter starts screaming, I checked and showed 16 volts shut off the apu (it wasn't throwing a code). Verified at the batteries with multimeter, yup vr toasted again.

Grounds seem to check out alright, truck alternator runs 13.8-14.0, all fuses and sense wire are ok.

Related issue, I have hydraulic doors on my trailer, the pump pulls power hard enough that the apu would sense low voltage and start. It does not do that anymore.

I do run a hard load on the apu for short periods 1300 watt max induction hot plate, about 1 minute then dropping to about 450 watts for a few minutes. Apu is 65 amp, 14.5 volt max.

Is it possible to burn out the vr with too high of a load, and would that be enough to do it

the grounds may seem, to be ok, i'd recommend removing the grounding straps or cables, deep clean the connections, and reattach. maybe spray some battery "corrosion protectant" on them as well, can be bought cheap at any auto parts store.

I did little modification on my Tripac. I cut the *Belt Tensioner 92-9046* and drilled new hole at end. Also bought a shorter belt from napa. Now after adjusting the belt alternator stays away from muffler. It stays exactly in the middle between engine and muffler. I run the unit few hours and measured temperature of alternator. It was running ~25 degrees cooler... No more burned voltage regulators.

I'm trying to make the same modification that you did. How much shorter you made the 92-9046 thermo king belt tensioner? Also if you can give me the part number for the new belt. Thanks

i cut about 2-2.5 inches... positioned alternator between engine and muffler, made markibg and cut it.
i dont remember bel number, the truck is sold now. i put old belt on it. Cut portion of belt. Then took that cut belt to Napa. The guy measured it and gave correct belt...

I use a NAPA 25060490 belt. It’s a 49” belt and puts the adjuster about midway in the slide. You would have to measure at the shortest point of the slide to see if a 25060480 will fit.
