I have just installed an old Sears roadtalker 40 slant face. I started working on tuning the antenna and now I have no tx. Rx fine but when I key the mic, the meter blips up and back down to 0. Radio rx cuts when I key the mic still and will output thru p.a. also the RX light doesn't light up at all when I key the mic.

It has the 5 pin style connector. I don't have access to another of those offhand. Would rather not have to buy one and find out the radio is dead anyways. Radio was a freebie so I'm not losing so far trying to keep it that way. Are the pa and radio tx run off separate circuits inside the mic itself? I would think if it outputs sound to the p.a. it should be working? I'm a newb though so maybe not

no if you want the pa/cb there should be a switch, on the back, side, or front panel?

Yes I am switching from cb to pa to talk thru pa and switching back to cb to transmit but got nothing. The meter blips when I key the mic but no tx or mod. light activating on the unit. Fearing blown finals? I opened it up after the problem occurred but they didn't appear blown or smell burnt. I guess I should put a meter across them and test for shorts on the final transistors legs...

you do have an external speaker plugged into the PA port in the back.???

i cannot help you with finals, first, seconds or thirds. if i ever had a cb that did not work, it got tossed into the trash.

No I had a speaker plugged in to the p.a. jack to test the mic. I just checked thef transistor and it's good, far as I can tell with the meter set to diode check it's checking out ok. Now I'm starting to think it is a mic problem... I have other cobra style 4 pin mics but idk. I see an adapter to convert 5 pin to 4 pin cobra but idk if that would work or not...

not sure myself. you could try, and hope you don't blow it out, or buy from ebay, or craigs list the mic you need, cheap?

anyhow, if it works, use it, might be a better built cb than any of todays cb's, plus of course, sears did not build it, would be interesting to know who did for sears..

Pretty sure it was made by cobra from what I've been researching. The adapter is like $7 on amazon. Meh maybe I'll give it a shot. Most 5 pin mics I'm seeing are near $20 new and I'd rather get a new one than some used thing of questionable repute

Cobra was founded as Dynascan in 1961 by electronics engineer Carl Korn,

kinda hard to say exactly who built it for sears.

i am not sure there were any other cb radios companies in America.

radio shack had cb's, but i don't know who built them for Radio Shack..

then there were cb radio receivers only that you could install under your car's dash, made by "Spark-o-Matic", if i recall, cuz i had one..lol
