Anybody have any experience with any schools in the Des Moines, IA area? Anything near 80 between Des Moines and Omaha would do, though Omaha's getting a bit far for me.

I know that Des Moines Area Community College (aka DMACC) has a CDL training program, and I'm going there next week for an open house kinda thing. DMACC's got a good reputation for most of their other vocational training, so I figure odds are good their trucking school is decent. Still if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.

I will be starting DMACC on Monday, I can keep you posted on how it goes if you would like. Also the only other CDL school that I know of is in Cedar Rapids, I think I may have seen something about a school in Ft Dodge but I am not sure about that one.

I went to one of DMACC's info sessions last week, and I'm going to try to get into the Aug. 23rd class. I've got about 6 things that need to go right for me to make that one though, so I may have to wait until the Sept. 14 classes.

I'm definitely interested in hearing what you think though. They seem like a pretty good operation. PTDI certified, 60 hours BTW... We could do a lot worse.

First day went well, lots of paperwork and watched a few videos. Drug test tomorrow. Had the opportunity to meet some of the instructors and I think this is going to go well, they are good people who definitely know their stuff. I know the classroom stuff is necessary but I can't wait to get on the road.

FYI- The DOT comes to DMACC to administer the driving skills test during the last week.

The first week is in the bag and I am getting excited to get on the road! I have tested and passed the general knowledge (for my CDL permit) and I have endorsements for combination and air brakes (which are required), I have also passed my tanker endorsement. One more week of classroom and then 4 weeks on the road! I think this program is going to be a good one but I am still stuck trying to figure out who I would like to work for when I graduate.

By the way, the only fee that you would need to pay for the permit and the endorsements is $12, the endorsements won't need to be paid for until you have your CDL and I believe those are $5 or $6 each.

So is each additional endorsement just a written test? I mean, I know that hazmat requires a background check, but other than that is it just answering some questions?

Do you get to do your written testing at DMACC or does it take a trip to the DOT?

I have heard some things about TMC on this or a similar board that make me want to steer clear of them. I'll probably try to get with a company that does mostly midwest and west, because I'd rather avoid the northeast until I can handle a truck like a pro.

Thanks again for the info. I really appreciate it.

Yes, everything at this point is written tests. I will not have to drive for DOT until last week before graduation, if you would like to get a head start on things you can study for your permit and endorsements then test for them. That way you will already have what you need it will minimize the amount of class time that you will miss while you wait forever and a day :biggrin_25518: to test driver's license station.

The DOT does the driving test at DMACC and we will be driving the school's truck but I believe the written test wil still require a visit to DL station. As for TMC, I have seen and heard a lot of things about TMC but the best thing I can suggest is to talk with a recruiter and, if possible, see if you can catch up with a driver or two at the local truck stops. As for me, I was never very good at climbing things when I was a kid much less now that I am 42 so flatbeds probably aren't going to be my thing but TMC sure has some sharp looking trucks!
There is also a list of trucking companies in the info packet they handed out at the meeting, go online and look at some of them to see what they may have to offer. You can get info on where they haul, what they haul, general info about pay and benefits, and if you are interested you can give them a call to discuss possible future employment.
I will continue to report what is going on at school and I hope this info helps you out.

    FatDave Thanks this.

if you do not mind doing a little traveling try Scott Community truck driver training school in bettendorf, ia. it is located on the road across from the flying j in davenport, Ia off I-80 exit 292. the school has been in business for 35+ years and is a very good school. they even now have a simulator. they also take you to the state driver license facility to take your road test. they do not give the test, they teach and get you ready to take the driving test. it is a great school.

Thanks for the info, cherokeechief. Unfortunately, I'm pretty much on the opposite side of Iowa, and it'd be easier for me to go to school in Omaha.

just be sure to do the research about the school. length of time they have been operating. length of classes. experience of instructors. and who gives the tests for getting your license.
