Anyone know of a good scan tool to pull codes out a 2003 c-12 in an intl 2004 8600 daycab. Called cat and said no go on software for laptop. Saw a couple of scannes but just code readers. Would like to be able to change some parameters. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this for only one truck? Only reason I ask is it's going to be expensive if you only want to check an occasional code or change certain parameters once, like speed limiter or cruse/engine brake settings. You can buy Caterpillar Electronic Technician and the communication adapter. Or Nexiq pro-link adapter and software, either way it's probably going to cost you at least $1500 unless you can find one used. Not bad if you'd use it often but spendy if you only use it once a year or so. Cat used to offer Pocket Technician for the truck owner, worked off a PDA or laptop but I don't know if they still do. You can use the cruse control to see what the code number is (if you don't already know that) but if you want diagnostic software those above are the 2 most popular that I know of.

Check Ebay, there's sometimes some deals on used adapters.

Thanks for the info. I am just a one truck operation but would like the capability of being able scan and test. Was looking at nexiq iq with c-12 software. Pricey is right, scan tol $2239.00 and cat legacy software $599.00. The nice thing is totaly upgradeable for the next truck. The other option like you said was the prolink but wont be made anymore as nexiq iq is the scanner of the future so i was told. Could you please tell me how to use the cruise control to retrive codes. Can you also clear codes with the cruise control? Thanks for info and advice.

I imagine theyre all the same as far as using the cruise for codes!!
On mine,,,a 2000 KW with a c-12,,,shut cruise switch "off",,hold down the resume switch and watch for engine codes flashing (check engine light)!!
Count the flashes,,,say code 13 will be obviously a single flash,,a second or 2 delay,,than 3 more flashes,,,,then if theres another code,,it'll wait 4 or seconds and start flashing it to you,,,,if I remember correctly,,,when you get a 55 flash,,,that marks the end of any codes recorded!!!
There was a post on here somewhere that listed what the different flashed codes where!!!

Ive had mine for almost a year now,,,haven't had anything go goofy on it for me,,,,I bought it from my father when he retired,,,he had it for 5 or so years,,,he went through a couple water pumps,,,had the head gasket done once,,and while they where "in there" they installed the updated cam followers,,,which i've been told by a very knowledgable source,,,that the upgrade should be done on every C-12,,,if not the original style will somehow blow itself out the side of the block,,,
Only other problem my father had was he fired an injector tip through it once,,,Knock on wood,,,i think the old boy got the kinks out of this one before I ended up buying it!!!
Overall,,,i pretty happy with it,,,I haul somewhat heavy,,,usually around 137000 gross,,,fuel mileage is decent,,,it doesn't have the nice sound that the bigger block engines have,,,,,and I always thought mine seamed kind of loud in the cab when the engine really gets working,,,,,,id but another one!!!
