I'm about to be rolling in my first year as an O/O and I was shopping around for insurance. I got a lot of the expected 18-22k progressive quotes but then I called this fella named Darren Dossman who was able to quote me a rate @ right around 10k/yr with like 1.8k down. He said he was able to do it by only getting me coverage for electrical equipment and I could add additional coverages later on and not have to worry about downpayment. The company is Total Trucking Insurance and I'm a little skittish on it for many reasons. For one, their website looks dodgy with lots of misspellings and the domain looks like it was registered in August 2018. So I guess I wanted to know if any of y'all have dealt with these guys or heard of scam insurance companies cuz the way I see it they could take that "down payment" and never give me any coverage and this premium sounds too good to be true

That's not an insurance company. That's an insurance agent. Check the BBB for info about the agent, then find out which insurance company they are offering coverage with. Brokers and shipper won't take just any insurance.
Google says "virtual business only". My knee-jerk reaction is run away. And what do you mean by you won't have to worry about the down payment? Who writes an insurance binder without money up front? No insurance company is going to issue a policy without money up front.Rounded_nut and HeroinBob Thank this. -
If it seems too good to be true it probably is. I'd leave it alone.

Good idea to check for references. They are using a web site builder template for the site design, meaning anyone can do it.
Doesn’t mean it’s fake, it’s just economical.
Your instincts maybe onto something. -
I would still pay downpayment for the lower premium policy then i could up the coverage later. So I would be paying the down payment on 10k instead of 18k.
I guess I good way to see how real this quote is would be to get the name of the actual company he'd be buying the coverage from and then calling that company directly. I don't mind paying an agent rather than directly to the company if the agent is more accessible. -
I found them in Georgia's business registry formed in 2016 and actively in compliance so maybe they are legit. Has anyone else heard of a first year O/O getting a 10k annual premium? I'd just never heard of a rate that low

If you're depending on a cheap inurance policy to keep you in business and out of trouble you're headed down a bad path.
And for what it's worth I agree that insurance, especially insurance for a rookie just starting out, is way too high.
It's way too high for us with established businesses too. -
I have 18+ years of clean record and my mc# is 16 years old. Progressive said my premium will be 14k . Northland gave me $8400 quote.
if later you will find out you were screwed up call to credit card company and disute transaction.Last edited: Jun 30, 2019
