SAM chassis module failure - Great!

    Last night I dropped a trailer and by the time i jumped back in the cab, the SAM chassis module had somehow failed and caused a power surge, causing all four of my headlight bulbs to burn out. GREAT. Now im not making money, and its all because freightliner decided to save some money on copper.

    For those of you that dont know, "all" new trucks have a multiplexed wiring system, to reduce the number of wires in the truck, everything except the radios is computerized. The headlight switch is hooked up to a computer, the computer turns the headlights on. Theres two SAM modules that run everything, and this is the main one.

    The weird thing is when it happened, my dome lights became as bright as the sun, but didnt burn out.

    I think i'll turn my lights off when i drop trailers next time. LOL.

    Everything except the light bulbs is being covered under the extended warranty.

    Nice, apparently the voltage surge was not caused by the SAM. So basically ive sat here for 8 hours to get headlight bulbs changed. They said sometimes this just happens. You'd think they'd make these trucks more reliable than they are.

    Dont know what it stands for, if its a surface to air missile i want to know where the trigger is. But it runs all of the electrical on the truck through multiplexed wiring. Every switch just sends a signal to it, mostly on the same wires.

    [SIZE=4][FONT=HelveticaNeue-LightCond]ask? The answer is that these SAMs also receive inputs from switches and sensors[/FONT][/SIZE]
    [SIZE=4][FONT=HelveticaNeue-LightCond]on the truck and use that information to control outputs that are wired to the[/FONT][/SIZE]
    [SIZE=4][FONT=HelveticaNeue-LightCond]SAMS. They also transmit that information on a Controller Area Network (CAN)[/FONT][/SIZE]
    [SIZE=4][FONT=HelveticaNeue-LightCond]databus called the Cabin CAN. Some of this information is used by the air conditioning[/FONT][/SIZE]
    [SIZE=4][FONT=HelveticaNeue-LightCond]control modules, called the Front Control Unit (FCU) and the Auxiliary[/FONT][/SIZE]

    [SIZE=4][FONT=HelveticaNeue-LightCond]engages the engine fan. The engine fan On Time varies with vehicle speed and[/FONT][/SIZE]
    [SIZE=4][FONT=HelveticaNeue-LightCond]park brake status . Vehicle Speed is sensed by the Vehicle Speed[/FONT][/SIZE]
    [SIZE=4][FONT=HelveticaNeue-LightCond]Sensor that is wired to the CPC. The CPC broadcasts Vehicle Speed over the[/FONT][/SIZE]

    Translation:

    You can't fix it yourself.
    In a few years when these parts are no longer available, the truck will have to be junked.

    All I can say is WTF? seem like they're making it complicated just so they can boast how good they are at making something so complicated!!

    Someone should also tell Freightliner that the thing under the bonnet that turns diesel into motion is call an engine not a motor (as in MCM), a motor is an electrical device.
