We just bought a truck in Arizona that is going to be registered in Missouri and we live in Washington. Our company that we’re going to lease onto is based in Missouri which is why they want to register it there. They are telling us that we need to title it in our home state of Washington. The dealer in Arizona says that if they do that we might owe $12,000 in sales tax to the state of Washington but their customers in California do not have to pay sales tax because it is apportioned. Do I owe sales tax to the state of Washington? Do I need to title it in the state of Washington? We put 65,000 down on a new truck and a Volvo is the lienholder.

Midnight, your getting confused.
Here is something you need to do, call this number and talk to someone who knows what the hell is going on in that weird state of yours - 360-533-3356 Ask for sales, these guy will tell you what's what.
AND don't put the title in another state, only in the state that you reside in or the company is headquartered in.
The plates can come from anywhere, they are separate from your title and lean party on the title. The plates fall under an agreement with all the states for interstate commerce, they are forced to do this by the feds.Justrucking2 and Midnightrider909 Thank this. -
Update: We just tried to apply for title ourselves in Washington. They said we had to have the original certificate of origin to do it and all we have is a copy from the Volvo dealer in Phoenix. The dealer in Phoenix is trying to get it done.

In washington you have to certify that at least 25 percent of your miles will be out of state. That certifies your sales tax exemption. See the manager at your vehicle license office or else go to a different office. I had to go to 5 different places the first time.

In MO, after filling out an exemption form using my carrier ((LS)) ‘s DOT number, there was no sales tax to be paid.
