First, anyone on this forum go through this school to get their CDL-A that could share some advice?
I contacted the school Friday and plan to attend one of their seminars this coming week.
I have a couple question and concerns, one being the area I'm in which seems limited on companies that will hire a new grad from here. The recruiter told me there were lots of them that will yet my research says otherwise. What I'm wondering is will they, or should I, try and get a pre-hire through Sage prior to plunking down 5k on the course?
I had stated my desired goal was to haul tankers and he said, pushing Schneider National, saying I could get on tankers with them after a year.
I had also inquired back in 2013 but didn't qualify for in-state tuition. At that time I had spoken with a gentleman that agreed with me on the bad hiring area. However this guy did insist they could find me a company even if it's local driving...sounds great to me.
My other concern is my work history since I moved to FL back in 2012. I moved here after buying a bunch of houses when the market crashed. Since then I have just been managing our properties and taking care of my 10 yo son. Where I'm located the market is red hot so I'm cashing out and going after what I've always wanted to do. Problem is I'm afraid no work history for the last 4 years is going to end my chances.
Everything else like driving record is spotless. I've had a Class B since 1984 and drove a few years back then. also have a lot of experience as a yard dog moving trailers around so I'm confident I can pass the road test with some schooling.
My desire is to drive a tanker and one day haul fuel locally and wondering if any companies would hire a new grad to haul tankers? My second choice is Flat-bed and last choice is Van.
Sorry for the long post but I need a mentor at this point![]()

As to your work history, you were manageing your own rental property, so you weren't unemployed.
Schneider Bulk hires new cdl grads; don't have to wait a year.
Here's some more that hire new cdl grads right out of school:
CTL Transportation - Sage, then tanker school in Tampa.
SVTN
Superior-Carriers
Tidewater Transit
McKenzie Tank Lines
Trimac Transportation
Flatbed
Cypress Truck Lines
Melton Truck Lines
Van
Abilene Motor Express
@JohnBoy is a trainer there and lives near you. -
"Schneider Bulk hires new cdl grads; don't have to wait a year."
My understanding was they would hire me out of school to run Vans and would be eligible after one year to get on their tanker division.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post, and giving me some companies to research. -

Chinatown Thanks this.

That said would you recommend me calling them prior to signing up for school for a pre-hire or wait until I am enrolled?
-
@Concorde you can do their online application now if you want or do it during the first week of school. They may offer you a job contingent upon successfully completing the school and having the required endorsements.
It's a good idea to start submitting applications the first week of school.Mtn Gal Thanks this. -
I just checked CTL website; they have tuition reimbursement up to $6000.00
Looks like you're covered for the full amount at Sage.
I don't know what they do at orientation, but some tanker companies do a stair step excercise then check your heart rate.
Start practicing that now and also lay a 2x4 on the floor of your garage or driveway and practice walking on it. You won't walk on anything near that narrow on a tanker, but if you can master the 2x4 you'll be good to go. No tippy-toe walk either; regular walk one foot in front of the other.Last edited: Jul 10, 2016
Mtn Gal Thanks this. -
The 2x4 I have mastered, actually I'm used to walking on 1.5" 20 to 30' in the air. Just one of the skills I acquired after 25 years of framing houses. No fear of heights and agile as a cat.
The heart rate is a little high I noticed today while working out in the 100 deg heat. Luckily my GF is a ARNP and can give me physicals every day if needed to get it down. She'll probably prescribe extra nightly activity until it's lowered
Also, after reading up on Trimac Trans I'm torn between the two. I almost think Trimac would be a better company... If it was you looking and had to choose between the two, who would you pick?
What I really want out of the first year is the best training I can get. -
"ethos" works for Trimac in their Elite Fleet. That's probably the company I would choose if it were me looking. Put ethos in the search and try to locate him.
Tell your girlfriend to check your sugar levels also. They're getting strict on that.
Good luck and best wishes on the extra nightly activity.
