Now nobody gang up on me, I haven't worked there, so I can't say personally how Safeway is to work for. I do know several guys who have worked for them: three left, two are still there. I worked with all five of them previously at FedEx Freight. The one who's been there the longest, oddly enough, is also the youngest. I did his advanced training after he finished his basics during his training for his CDL through the company. The other on is his dad, a long time line driver. The three that left Safeway did so shortly after orientation and training. They weren't happy with the varied shifts and what they told me was mandatory overtime. They were all looking for somewhere to retire, but they all have 20-30 years already in, they're not interested in a bunch of overtime.
One of them just hired on at my company, and another is hoping to get on with us as well.
I can only tell you what I know, I don't have a dog in the Safeway fight.
@Beau, what are you looking to get into? Something different, other than tanks? -
BTW, let me clarify; Safeway might be exactly what you're looking for, don't let me discourage you from applying there. Everyone has different needs and goals.

If you're looking to get a union job, you could probably look over this link to see what's available.

You could also check over the LTL companies in the area (FedEx Freight, SAIA, ABF, YRC, Oak Harbor, Peninsula, Reddaway, Conway, ODFL...).
There are also a whole bunch of Alaska consolidators in the area: Lynden Transport, Pacific Alaska Forwarders (PAF), American Fast Freight (AFF), Span Alaska, Carlile Transportation.Last edited: Dec 19, 2016

Thank you for the great information. It is appreciated. I currently have a well paying job but will be looking at the Spokane area. What attracts me to grocery hauling is the benefits and retirement package. I currently have all insurance paid for by the company for the family. That has made a HUGE difference in our lives. There are very few companies that still offer this so that would be the most appealing. Throw in that plus a 401k and the possibility of a pension and I'm all ears. As far as OT, I've been working nights and averaging 65-75 hours a week. The 50-60 range would be ok with a lower cost of living.Pintlehook and JReding Thank this. -

On indeed there is an ad for Spokane. That's about all that I know. I could PM you with my current details.
Bob Dobalina and JReding Thank this. -
Albertsons (Safeway, ACME) pays REALLY well. $100+ is easily obtainable. A couple ACME drivers I know make over $80k and only work 9-10 hours a day. Fully paid benefits, pension, severance pay, the list goes on and on. A recent retiree got a million dollar severance pay on top of his pension. And it's ALL no touch freight. You bid on start times, not runs, and loads are paid by trip rate. If you get a 14 hour run and you get it done in 9, you get paid the 14 with OT after 8. Extra days are paid time half, second extra is paid double time. Yard Jockey's are paid hourly. Safeways contract I would assume would be similar, since their part of the Albertsons family.
Mike2633, Pintlehook, Air Cooled and 1 other person Thank this. -
