I work with a fleet of O/O and my uncle who is also an O/O. When helping him review his road side emergency kit the only thing he had missing was road flares. Long story short he outright refuses to carry them in his truck because he feels they're more of a safety hazard than anything. After talking to him I asked a few of the other O/Os I work with and they also refuse to carry them. Is this a common thing among truck drivers? I thought they were a mandatory item per §392.22 (f)(2). I was looking for others thoughts on this matter. Thanks!
Safety Road Flares - Do you carry them?

Triangles OR flares are mandatory. Most people don't set triangles up properly so you don't see them until you almost run over them anyway
JoeyJunk Thanks this. -
No flares for me........
-
Nope. Have not worried about them near 30 years now.
Ive lit a few in my time. More trouble than they are worth, particularly with hazmat loads etc.
Any time truck has a problem it's triangles. And you can plan on getting a replacement set after it's all over. Because the freeway winds destroy the set in a hour even when text book deployed. -
I did not realize the triangles could be a replacement. I was under the impression you needed both. Thank you for the clarification.

Saw a couple in an antique store the other day,,,may as well carry "flare pots" with you
tscottme Thanks this. -
Yep, like to use them when hauling explosives
JoeyJunk, kemosabi49 and Trucker Kev Paid Tourist Thank this. -
I carry a few. I only use the triangles though I’ll use the flares too if maybe there’s a serious wreck and it’s night it’ll call more attention. But for a standard non serious breakdown I’ll stick with the triangles.
