I wanna buy a freightliner columbia.
I'm not sure whether or not I need to go on a SAE shopping spree or not.
How long has the trucking industry been on SAE? I know its been for longer than the car industry but I dont know when they made the switch, if at all.
SAE vs Metric, Whats actually being used on these things?

I thought everything was going metric and away from SAE?
Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
Trucks assembled with different components from different manufacturers from all over the world. Tool boxes in North America will likely continue to contain both Metric and American tools for all of eternity across the board in every shop and every profession of every vehicle type from old to new.
Coming up wrenching in the 80's and 90's in automotive, especially GM stuff it was nothing to have a good mix of both tools out on any engine in any vehicle. Frustrating but true, and still the case today. While most engine makers have switched over completely to metric. Even Cummins. I would definatley say there is way more metric than there use to be.Another Canadian driver, Oldironfan and AModelCat Thank this. -

Have both available. You can NEVER have too many tools!!!!
I worked at a John Deere dealer for 10 years, and needed both SAE and Metric. I acquired quite a set of tools in those 10 years. Then, when I quit to drive truck, I figured I wouldn't need the tools anymore. So like an idiot I sold everything, for a fraction of what I had invested. I figured it was easier than trying to move everything home. I also had the option to buy everything back if driving didn't work out. Three years later, I started running local, and found out I wanted my tools back. He wouldn't sell. So, I'm slowly building back up to what I had. The wife isn't very happy with all this.....Another Canadian driver, Oldironfan and Zexesy Thank this. -

I have 7 tool boxes and a roll cart at home with both SAE, and Metric tools. I just bought a Snap-On full 30 pc tool box set with all the bells and whistles for tools, compressor, welder, and so forth. I would never sell my tools, boxes, or so forth. I understand why you did it. But you are an example as to you never know when you will need your tools.Another Canadian driver, rbrtwbstr and Oldironfan Thank this.
