I'm about to change out the pan, pan gasket and pan bolts on an 11.1 Series 60. Do I need to put any silicone sealer on any joints to avoid leaks? I use the Right Stuff.

I just put a dab where the front and rear housings meet the block. On the front, you have the inner and outer front cover, so there's 2 dabs on each side in the front.

What I do is clean the seams front and back with solvent then when the solvent is still damp put on Loctite 5699, The pan gasket unless torn is very few times the problem. The tensioners on the bolts are usually the problem they get hard and week. I really recommend you change all of them.

I agree. I'm pretty sure new pan bolts come with new spacers and rubber isolators, but you'd better check to be sure.

The old pan was the old style and appear to be leaking front the front portion of the block. The old pan was, "Old style," while the new style pan has a different gasket and 10 new bolts/rubber gaskets that go with them. I even put "The Right Stuff" RTV on the front and rear of the pan and around all the bolt holes just outside the gasket that is on the pan.

My old pan also was damaged at one point and repaired. It appeared something poked through the front of the pan and they used some type of compound to seal the leak on the bottom. How ever, I'm not sure if that leak was sealed. I had oil leaking front the front gasket area down the front of the pan to where the damage was to right beneath the pan. I do not know where the oil was coming from exactly. It was quite messy.

    Thanks again.

I'm not very happy right now. After installing a new pan, new style gasket and even putting "The Right Stuff" along the front and rear of the pan, there is a leak present around the front area of the pan, but I can't tell exactly where it is coming from. Yes, the front crank seal is leaking but with the engine off it surely can't cause it to leak out that much. Not too thrilled.

I put The Right Stuff on the outer portion of the gasket. Maybe the leak is not coming from the pan gasket? Where else could the oil leak be coming from? This new oil pan came with 10 new bolts with new rubber grommets and new style gasket, all Genuine Detroit parts too.

You have to clean the area and find the leaks exact location.

The only possibility I can think of is, due to the fact the truck is lower in the front and higher in the rear, the oil will run towards the FRONT of the engine. The engine is also tilted to the right(Passenger side) because the clearance is so tight, other wise the valve cover would not be able to be removed.

I have attached four pictures. One picture shows the oil leak under the air compressor, another shows the leak pattern before I wiped it. A third picture shows a rag stuff up there to absorb oil so it doesn't drip on the ground and finally another pic shows the front case of the engine. I would venture to guess, the accessory bracket for the air compressor is leaking oil. Was the oil pan leaking? Yes, it was.

    Thanks.

I know this wont make you feel any better, but if my engine was that dry & that was the only leak, I would be happy & not even worry about it.
