So, I made the decision to get out of OTR trucking and look for a daycab job. I now have two companies that want me to drive for them, and I'm not sure which one to go for.
Ryder has a 5 year contract with Lewis Bakery that they promise will pay me 1,000$ per week. However, this is not salary, it's what they estimate based on mileage and stop pay. I'd be working 60-70 hours per week.
However, my fear is that this contract could possibly go away one day, and it's not like there is an abundance of other Ryder contracts that would get me home every day where I live.
The local Pepsi distribution plant wants me to drive one of their smaller trucks (still requires Class A CDL), and they pay 450$ per week or per case, whichever ends up being higher.
Pepsi is a bit more attractive in my opinion, since there seems to be a better route for career advancement. I can move up to bulk deliveries (still a daycab), which pays as much as ryder. It'd also be easier to take an office job later on when I get tired of driving altogether! Furthermore, unless people stop drinking pepsi, I'm pretty safe from layoffs!
So I'll ask the wise people of TTR that have been driving longer than me! What seems like the better choice to you guys?
Ryder VS Pepsi

Bakery jobs run 24 hrs a day. You might work days, nights, weekends, or any combination of the above.
-
My Dad used to drive Bakery. He retired from it, liked the overnight hours.
As far as Pepsi, is it running one of those side loaders? That's a lot of lumping cases in and out of convenience stores if it is. -
Here my opinion...
For Ryder, with a contract can be good or bad. Once the contracts up they might not renew it again. Also if you dont mind working days, nights or weekends this could be for you. It is a bakery account which food seems to be the best to get into. Friend of mine works for a guy who has a contract for LKQ but his contract doesnt expire so hes safe.
As for pepsi, I believe they are union if its the bottling company. Side loader you will be lumping cases up and down all day, but like you said you can eventually move up to bulk. Since pepsi is a very popular drink you wont have to worry about lay-offs.
I would go with pepsi. Not sure how old you are but if you can handle the side loader you will be ok then. I work for an LTL company which he are required to load, or unload our trailers with a pump jack or hand truck. Food industry is probly best to get into since people will always need food. -
Thanks for the fast responses everyone!
I'm 24 and in good health. I spent the past year with TMC, so I'm willing to bet that those cases of Pepsi are a bit lighter than those darn tarps
I agree that Pepsi is probably the better choice long term. Besides, promising 1,000$ per week seems to be the standard for recruiters looking to fill a driver's seat! -

Consider.....those 100lb bags of flour lumping them into rear bakery doors. It's called "inside delivery".
-
I worked for them. They "had a contract". Was "supposed to be" good for 3 years.
One month into the job??
The customer fired off Ryder!!!
Ryder contracts ARE NOT BINDING when it comes to the customer firing them off. AND YOU WILL WORK HARD. TRUST ME!!!
They have the CVS account "up here" where I live.
Ryder "policy" at that place here where I live??
YOU MUST DO 2 TRAILERS each day!!!!
(even the place I worked at, 2 TRAILERS PER DAY!!!)
any more trailer work, is a "bonus for you".
When Ryder loses any account(??) you are up "ships creek" with NO PADDLE!! AS THEY DO NOT ALWAYS HAVE ANOTHER JOB FOR YOU!!!
Go PEPSI.
BETTER UNION JOB as well.ACH1130 Thanks this. -
