I want to share my experience with product called Corroseal. I had badly rusted rear axles and rear side of frame on my truck. My truck was originally from MI. I used before POR-15, Rust Bullet and Rust Destroyer. These are oil based rust converters. My friend suggested to use Corroseal. I just little cleaned rusted areas with metal brash and washed by water. I waited until surface is dry and applied Corroseal by brash. Corroseal is water based rust converting primer. After applying by brash rust sucked the primer and chemical reaction started. Within 10 min rust became black colored something. After 20 min I applied second layer. Waited 24h for curing. Next day I took the Dremel and grinded small are to see rust is there under primer or not. There was no rust under primer. I top coated primer by Rust-Oluem High Performance Enamel which is oil based and finished my job.
I highly recommend Corroseal. Working product. However if rust is on thin sheet metal I would recommend POR-15 or Rust Bullet.

    Hm. Interesting. Wonders never cease.

In my day we head out with a hammer and pick until rust is off repaint with black enamel. If it punched the frame or some such really big thin problem then it becomes possible that we will need to replace it.

Most of the rust is surface and does not attract too much attention, maybe your use of the new product will cut down on that.

This primer is like milk. When I applied to rust I saw chemical reaction started. Milk like white color started changing to dark blue and eventually became black. Chemical way to destroy the rust that's what I saw. Before I would hammer and sandpaper like you said and I would apply good enamel on effected areas.
