Does anyone have any information on these two companies, both of which are a part of the J.D. Irving group, and based out out of New Brunswick ? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

RST is a mostly tanker outfit and primarily composed of O/O's and is based in Saint John NB.

Sunbury is a forest product hauler (newsprint to lumber), again mostly O/O, van and flatbed and based out of Fredericton NB. They were branching into Automotive and Gen Freight based out of Toronto but most of those guys were Pakistani and East European teams.

Maritime drivers were paid substantially less than the Ontario drivers due to "a cheaper cost of living in the Maritimes" (direct quote from Jack Irving).

Irving also owns Midland Transport (general freight and Reefer) and Protrans (their "driver service") based in Dieppe NB and the Freightliner dealership just down the street.

All the companys haul mostly Irving products as their base and they pretty much control the freight rates in the Maritimes. Most of the other smaller outfits "buy loads" out of the Maritimes from Irving and the rate is cheeeeeap.

They prefer to use O/O's and they do push Truck Fleece at their company drivers.

Last time I worked for them their company drivers were getting paid .29 per mile while the Ontario drivers got .32.

I worked with and around all of them since the '70s (including the run on pills era) and all info is accurate up to 6 yrs ago when I moved to the USA.

Oh, if you screw up with them they will blacklist you with all the other companies in the Maritimes so you will be out of the industry. Irving has way too much control.

I have to aggree with above answer,I didn't say they where the best, just good.I was treated very well by Sunbury,I was paid more than the east drivers,Always had good equipment, alot of eastern seaboard runs, paper out, what ever back.Never stuck for a load, never force dispatched.

Never run out of hours, dispatch never pushed me too cheat HOS.Now this was 14 yrs ago, what it's like today I dont know..

As for the best company,I don't think there is one, they all have problems now..

I'll admit I have a jaudiced view of the Irvings from the "old days" (pre-logbook) when you ran on pills and they worked the guts out of you then tossed you aside like yesterday's newspaper. To be fair, so did everybody else. Just fries me when they talk about "Always been about safety" when you bought your pills right in dispatch.

KC Irving was a gentlman. He worked you hard but you could talk to him. Lord, but you best not be seen near a liquor store, tavern or strip club with his name on your truck. Instant dismissal and blacklist.

Young Jim irving is much the same. Most of the rest are "I'm rich, you aren't". Aviod getting involved with hauling Jim's wife's horses around tho. Nice lady but she'll drive you batty. Horses are her "babies" and get much better tratment than you will.:biggrin_2559:
