My 87 uses basically a speed sensor in the bell housing, it might have just broke a wire, mine is located in passenger side.

The bell housing is the most common spot. Its a 2 wire sensor. If the bell housing doesn't have a tapped hole, stewart warner offers a sensor that runs off the fuel pump tach drive. That sensor may require the use of a stewart warner tach.

The stewart warner may be your only option, the engine I have that started as a 290 does not have the option for the bell housing tach. I believe you do have to use their tach though.

You should have a tapped hole in the bellhousing, my '84 BC III 400 does. It is offset to the passenger side, from bottom center.
