Have to get to Elkins, WV tomorrow from I-81. Which is the better route, US-250 or US-33 ? Flatbed grossing 70k.

Might as well take that 33. Check with WVa DOT for truck restrictions first. Also check that weather before you get off 81

I do not have very much experience taking on that western line of the Shenandoah excepting further south west of Roanoke which is seriously epic on two particular spots coming and going. Seeing nothing but sky in one direction and seeing nothing but cliff the other way.

All of the other possible routes take you up against the mountain. As much as I love mountain work, Id just pull up the big boy pants and take on US 33. 250 would be eh... a longer and harder way around to 219. And the Winchester alternatives are not that much better.

You did not say which way you coming on 81? Harrisburg or Knoxville? Maybe you can extend to I-79 and get into Elkins from the west perhaps? Eat and drink hearty, you be in battle tomorrow. Be safe, check that oil level and your brake pads.

Thanks @x1Heavy . I did fail to mention which way I'm coming from on 81. Gonna be coming north. But only from 20 or so miles south. Loading in Lawrenceville, VA.

    Now that helps alot.

Might as well run up Richmond, zip up I-64 to I-81 and then take your pick of 250 or 33. Im inclined to want 33. I have a habit of taking on the mountain head on and get it over with.

I haven't been to WV in 30 yrs, thought it would be a good idea to take a state road to go around the scale, man was I wrong.I had a load of old bridge beams(from I-95 in DC) 65' long, the road turned to gravel halfway. Them drivers in their WV Cadillacs(P/U with a quad in da back)must have thought I was nuts dragging those beams around them curves. Most of them had to panic stop when they saw me coming, lol. I'll never try that again. Come to think of it, I turned down a couple of WV loads after that.

33 might be the lesser of those two evils.

@OLDSKOOLERnWV , any words of wisdom.

Got held up at my shipper. So, neither route is written in stone till the morning. I was out 33 20+ years ago in a pickup. Don't remember much about it. Don't recall ever being on that stretch of 250.

I'm leaning a little toward the 33 route. Seems the info I'm getting here and elsewhere weighs a little more that way.

At least 33 will take you right to it.

Memory has a way of coming back at you from 20 years ago.

Most of the time that remembering goes POOF 20 years from now.

I don’t know about US 250 but, 33 in West Virginia is horrible.... between harmans and Seneca rock is atrocious, there’s a curve called deadman’s curve.... look it up
