I'm about ready to change my oil , I have a Detroit series 60 and I can get Five gallon pales at a very reasonable price ,, Question: Should I use this oil?

best thing is to find out the rating of the oil required for the engine, then find out if the rating of Rotella is equal to or better. I personaly use oil that is better than required (I use Delo 400 in my Cummins M11 and also add 40grams of Moly)

I have been using Rotella T for 30 years in all 3 major brands and never once have I had an oil related problem.
MartinFromBC, ampm wayne and 123456 Thank this. -
I would use & have used, rotella, delvac. penzoil. any name brand quality 15w40 I would feel safe to use. over 1.4 mil miles using what ever is on sale. I have never used a generic brand like wal-mart super tech, but have been tempted by the price.

If you can get rotella at a good price you better stock up while its still reasonable. I bought 13 5gal buckets when they were on sale last month at orielly's for $59 each with tax. Noticed today at Tractor Supply they're $65 a bucket with tax and Wal Mart has them for $75 a bucket with tax...

going tomorow to stock up on rotella.....
atwoods has it on sale for $49 a bucket...buckets are a hassle when changing oil, but
i guess a little savings is worth a little hassle -
I use Rotella 15W40 in my Series 60, have used it back when I had a 3406, no problems. Might there be some advantages to switching to a synthetic? Possibly, but its hard to change to something else when you haven't had any issues with what you're using.

I get a 15w40 50% synthetic blend, under a private label, delivered to my door in a 55 drum for around $9 a gallon total cost including delivery. At least with the last drum I got a couple of months ago. The specs on this oil is as good or better than most other name brand blends on the market. Check with local bulk oil suppliers for good deals as well as the normal checking at parts stores, farm and home stores, wally world, etc.
One thing about my supplier, I put my used oil in another drum and they cart it away for free when they bring me a new drum of oil.
Name brand really doesn't mean much today as it did in the past. The specifications like CJ-4, CI-4+, etc are so specific that in order to meet a specific classification, they are pretty much the same mixtures. Keep in mind, that only ONE company make the bulk of base oil for the entire North American market.... Motiva out of Port Arthur, TX. And most of the add packs in oils are made by Infineum. What you find in all the jugs is just what these guys produce, it is mixed and bottled and has a brand label slapped on it. Virtually all the no name brands are done up by Warren Distribution using the same products Motiva and Infineum produce. The big name brands will mix and bottle their own, but the base stocks are the same as the no name brands. With the big name brands, you are paying for all that advertising, race cars, concerts at truck shows, radio shows, etc that they sink money in to. I prefer to just get a local labeled oil at a good price and not bankrole the added stuff.Last edited: Apr 20, 2011

I used 9 gallons of Rotella 15w40 with 2 gallons of Lucas stabilizer every 20,000 miles in my Detroit series 60. When a wrist pin broke at 1 million miles I did a complete overhaul. It was not burning any oil up to that point. When they got the engine apart, they could see hone marks in all 6 cylinders. I attribute that more to the Lucas than the oil because of what Cowpie1 said.
