Hello, when rotating tires on the drives, which position helps with tire life?

I know the right rear axle tires wear the fastest and which wears the least fastest?

Im thinking of rotating the tires with the most tread over to the right rear and the tires from the right rear to which ever position wears the least.

    What are your thoughts?

The tires I have are Continental HDL2 DL.

    I really like these tires.

The best tire rotation depends on how your tires are wearing, which will differ from truck to truck, although as you mentioned, there can be common patterns. You want to keep tread depth records for every tire, specifically, the wear on both outer edges and the center. Keeping records also helps salvage tires before they get really bad.

We just do a simple front to back when rotating drive tires.

These Continentals are my first set of tires since I started working for the company.

They originally were on the 2001 sterling I used to drive for over 4 years.

I pulled the tires off and installed them on the current truck I’m driving now.

When I pulled them off the other truck, I rotated them for this truck with the highest tread placed on the right side rear drive.

Now I’m seeing the right side rear drive is wearing down and am now thinking the tires should be rotated soon once weather warms up.

Just like a cars 4 tires, cross them up, and move fronts straight back. That’s going to give you the most even wear. But like others, despite all claims to the contrary, I prefer to keep them going in the same direction. Superstition, from when steel belts were first introduced. Fear of shifting belts remains in my mind.

    Hmm...

I’m sure I can rotate tires like that and keep them in the same direction, but will have the issue of having to do serious cleaning of the inner rims of oxidization and thick layer of brake dust to make them look presentable on the outside.

Or break them down the 2 right rear outers and flip them. Not worth it. I’ve hardly ever bothered rotating them. Better save the money towards next set. Sometimes, but 4 at a time, 2 yrs in a row, moving rears up to front axle. 4 newer on rear axle. All wear out at same time. Just depends. Sometimes a better deal is had buying 8, sometimes all I can afford is 4. Currently have 6 steers, 1 80%+ 1 50% Luggers on front axle. It’s been a tough year. Lol

I know of guys that do that, move the tires to the front, 4 new drive tires on the rear.

As the person that does the fleet tire changing, all the other trucks run recaps or cheap tires that we just change whatever is worn out with 2 new ones each time.

I do most of the further away driving, heavy hauling, floating and got the complete set of 8 virgin continental drive tires. The other truck I drive, the blue freightliner in the sig, that one uses virgin 728 bridgestones.

I’m no fan of recaps on my truck, especially rain or winter.

I’m happy that my boss allows me to chose tires that I like.

I had one set of Continentals, 20 yrs ago. Best Drives I ever had. I liked them much better than Bridgestones. Just a great tire
