    Hi All,
I just bought a straight truck (24 foot) "AS IS" without the roll up door in the rear (am told the frame that held/carried the door come loose and fell off). I bought the truck in Atlanta Georgia and I live in Boston Massachusetts. I do NOT intend on carrying anything in the box, that is (box will be completely empty). I have a local shop in Massachusetts that can either repair this box or replace it with a another used box.
    My question/s is:
    1. Can I drive the truck as is (without rear roll up door) from georgia to massachusetts legally?
    2. Do I need a permit to do so?
I would appreciate all your thoughts.
    Newbie, Houzz

Swift does it all the time!

Local guys do it all the time, if they have a liftgate. I don't think it's illegal if it's empty....but don't quote me on that.

We had a trailer brought to MN from VA with the roll-up door open with no problem.

If you do find that in some states the door has to be covered, just get a tarp, and a couple 2 inch straps with ratchets, and tarp it closed. I am pretty sure it won't be an issue as long as the box is still structurally sound enough to stay box shaped. If enough framing is missing back there that it leans one way, or back and forth on each curve, that'll be what causes you issues.

The only problem with the Swift truck rolling with the doors latched open like that is I'm sure that makes the trailer more than 102" wide.
