Rod bearings replacement?

Pull the rod caps and check for wear, if good keep trkn

 

If they've never been checked by 900k,I would want to look at them.Oil and metallurgy have increased in leaps and bounds since the old days,but if I owned it,I'd want to know,but that's just the mechanic in me.Lot cheaper than putting a crank in.Not the easiest job,and messy ,too.And while your doing it,pull a main or two,and check them.Make sure you check the top bearing on the rods,and the lower bearing on the mains,that's where the wear will be.Do you have a big 3/4 drive torque wrench?In the old days,we just rolled bearings in every 250k,overhaul at 400k+or-,sop.

 

As a rule the top bearing will wear more than the bottom bearing. Worse if it's lugged down a lot. A good indication of bearing wear is a large difference in oil pressure from cold start idle to warm idle

 

You Have to remove top bearings to see wear. Bottom bearings will still be seated in cap when dropped.

 

If the journals on crank look scratchy, you can crocet cloth then to polish them up, DONT USE EMERYCLOTH!

 

I think you'll find some minor wear, but nothing that needs replacement. The thing is, why go through all the trouble of pulling the pan and a couple of caps just to inspect? You're 60% there to replacing them now, just go the rest of the way and replace them all. Complete waste of time just to inspect 1 or 2 anyway. If you are content to only inspect 2 and assume the rest are fine, then you might as well assume they are all fine and don't bother to inspect in the first place.
