Rocky Mountain Truck Driving School, New Mexico
I ran a quick forum search and one person says they're a good school. Has anyone else been through their program recently? If so, can you give please me some basic information? Are they worth the money? Do they help drivers find jobs? (contacts really) Locally?
I always get nervous when I get ready to write a big check without much guarantee of getting what I paid for.

They are about average for schools, their big carrier partners are Swift and Werner. They are owned by a local truck repair company and do have some local placement as well. Their equipment is not that bad, the local company I work for has hired a few drivers from their school, they have been decent drivers. Given the choice however I would go with the CMN program, it seems to be more detailed and more involved. Either way good luck.
Desert_Pirate Thanks this. -
Thanks; my first school back in the 90's was "Roadmaster" in Tampa, Florida. If the one here in albq is about the same, I know what to expect - the average. (meaning they don't screw the customer)
I graduated from CNM last year with my A.A. in "nothing important," so I'm very familiar with them. I figure the only issue would be having to wait for a longer period of time to get my CDL A license again. Say, January for the Rocky Mountain verses what? Late April I figure for CNM. (Spring session)
Since you're in the area, I don't suppose I could convince you to give me some better local company driver information could I? Talk about it over a nice lunch some place in town perhaps? I'm buying. -
I would love to take you up on that offer but sadly this is my last week in ABQ, we are moving back to Pennsylvania but thanks anyway. There are many good local companies that will hire right out of school, check with the food service companies, Labatt's comes to mind. I may be wrong but I think Saia and Central Transport, both LTL companies are looking plus it wouldn't hurt to go out to Conway Freight, their terminal manager is a good guy and he will hire some one with no cdl and train in house so maybe you could get your schooling that way? If you get tank and hazmat Coastal Transport is always hiring fuel delivery drivers, they are not the best but it would get you in the door for that segment which does pay well if you can get into Groedyke, UPT, or Western.
If you have mechanical skills our company is looking for tow truck drivers, the hours are long but the pay is ok and we cover the cdl school if you show potential. Personally thought if I had to do it again I would try real hard to get into one of the LTL carriers even if it meant working the dock for a while.
Conway Freight is out off Atrisco Vista (exit 149 on 40), Saia is off Hanover just west of Coors, Estes is off Princeton near Candelaria, Central is Edith and Commanche, and the fuel companies are all off Broadway south of Rio Bravo. It wouldn't hurt to go knock on some doors and see what shakes out. Good luck!Desert_Pirate Thanks this. -
It's okay; I would never begrudge someone escaping from "The Land of Entrapment." One my duties as a relative's "caretaker" are over, I'm selling everything and leaving New Mexico, *forever*, this time.
Hey, to this end, working for a national LTL company could really be a nice way to relocate, with a job, when the time comes.
Anyway, thank you very much for the local company info; I do appreciate it. Good luck in Pennsylvania and if you pass through this black hole in the desert, er "city" again, lunch is still on me.
