I am looking at a 2000 Kenworth with a 12.7 Detroit in front of a 10 speed Rockwell. This will be for some off road and close haul ag work. Dont know much about these Rockwell transmissions, will it hold up as good as a Eaton?? Has a 3.73 rear-end(also a rockwell i believe). I cant find what i want, so i was thinking of buying what i wanted in a 10 speed and in a year or 2 swapping in a 18 speed. I know the history of the truck(very well cared for) and that means alot to me. Has close to a million on it.
What do you think??

Are they really that bad??

I like rockwell(meritor) axles better. Tranny ain't to bad with that kind of miles on it. The 18 is the way to go for off road, but run whats in it for now.

Would an 18 speed eaton swap right in? Approximate cost??
-
as I know really Rockwell are ZF manuals apdated for US market
-
What are ZF manuals??
-
ZF is the European transmission maker. They make ZF Freedom line/Astronic Auto, they make transmission for cars and Manual transmission for European trucks (DAF, IVECO, Renault, MAN).
So as I know, Rockwell transmissiona are really ZF but apdated for floating gears (on EU truck you have to clutch every time you shift). -
Has anone ever had a truck with a rockwell tranny? Have been told they don't shift as nice when floating gears compared to an eaton. Is this true??
